Why would you get married?!

Talk about anything in here.

Why would you get married?!

Postby ~Natsumi Lam~ » Mon Sep 26, 2005 1:59 am

I am wondering what your reasoning for getting married would be? or not to get married.

Is it for love, closeness, a perminent significant other, another person to be on an adventure with..... money?

If I were to get married, it would be (hopefully) for several reasons:

1) Because it is God's will for my life
2) Because I love the person, and he me
3) ... can't think of any others

1. Because God gave me a beautiful girl
2. Because God said that it is not good for man to be alone in life
3. Because I am male hear me roar.

Actually, for most guys I've spoken with they say it's because they want a family. For me, it's because of love. I've been asked "Why not just have a girlfriend for the rest of your life then?".

To that .. I guess I'll have to say, because marriage is the superior (and correct) option.

I think you get married to be with the one you love all the time!
Also, Rev, don't you I think that we should be complete before we get married? God doesn't make half people, we become whole in Him before we can be whole in any other area of life. (coming from a single person, lol) but if you think about it its kinda true. You don't need someone else to be comeplete, just God. ^^

No. If it's the Lord's will for your life that you will be with another the Scriptures declare "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24)

Therefore, the man and woman are not truly complete until they are joined together (become one flesh) even in a relationship to God.

Ordinarily I would never post in this thread, but in this case I will for one very small reason:
~Natsumi Lam~ wrote:or not to get married.

Thank you for at least including that clause. I have no intention of being married, and though I'd rather not talk about it, the subject comes up an annoying number of times (though I can't complain about this thread, because I'm involved by choice).

What are my reasons? In brief, because I don't want to bore anyone with a massive post:

1) Initially, in general I do not like people. While I wouldn't say that I dislike them, I have no desire to be around the majority of them (there are a few exceptions). Marriage would mean being around someone a lot. I already have my hands full trying to extend agape love to humanity.

2) Also, marriage is all about compromise. It requires constant self-sacrifice and a commitment to your partner. Married people will tell you that it is worth it, and though I believe it can be, I do not think this would be true for me. As long as I feel this way, it would be horribly irresponsible to enter such a serious relationship.

3) Being married ties you down quite a bit. You have to consider where that person wants to live, what climate they can handle, what their dreams and aspirations are, what kind of lifestyle they feel they can afford, and so on. All in all, it seems a lot easier to be on my own, where I can focus solely on what I believe God would like me to do with my life.

4) A decent reason to marry is for support and an extremely intimate friendship. I don’t feel that I need either, nor do I particularly want to pursue them.

5) Children. I don't like them (as a whole, I mean, not constantly). That doesn't preclude being married (this is why it is at the bottom of my list), but it is impossible under Christian morality without being married and hence is a factor.

But ultimately, my real question is: why? I can't think of a reason I would want to be married. Of course, if God truly wanted to do that to me, it would be within His power and rights.

Reverend Doc wrote:No. If it's the Lord's will for your life that you will be with another the Scriptures declare "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24)

Marriage? I'd like to get maried someday, I guess. But I have way too many things to do first. And they aren't exactly conducive to family life. Travel and such.
I guess the only reason I would ever want to get married would be to have a partner to go on adventures with as you said.
I don't know though. Most christian guys I know are the family type. They want kids and a white picket fence.(my worst nightmare :shady: )
I have to agree with this, especially since the girl is the one who generally does the "child rearing" or what have you.

So, that's my cynical take.

Boredom.

Actually, there's alot I'd have to do first, namely get through tech school (actually get into one first) and get a steady life going, then I'd have to the hardest part --- become social.

I do like kids (some kids, anyways). They're fun to influence (Mwahahaha...).

-i know that god has a campanion out there for everyone and uc psuedonym u may not think it or want it but there is a girl out there for u ^_^

The Letter from God Dear child, Despite your silence, I have heard your soul weeping. Why have you been so unhappy? Have you forgotten my everlasting love for you? Child, you are mine. Why have you not called my name sooner? If you seek me, I will answer. I am your counselor, ready to instruct you and show you which path to take. When you come to me, I will embrace you and silence all your fears. Just remember that I am here to hold you close and dry your tears. I will always be right beside you. Not only am I your father, but your best friend. Do not be afraid to ask for my mercy and forgiveness. I know that its hard to live on earth, so I understand when you fall down once in awhile, ask me for help, and I will pick you up and carry you. No one loves you more than I do. When you feel alone, remember I am beside you. When you feel helpless, remember I offer myself to you. When you feel lost, remember I will lead you, and when you feel forgotten, remember that you are my child and I will love you unconditionally. It is never too late to come home. I will be here waiting, ready to embrace you. I will leave the light on for you. Forever with you, God

I want to for, same basic reasons as anyone else. But being still single with more and more of my friends becoming couples (and mes still being single :/) I always get that little fear in my head that it might not happen. Not to say I gotta grab someone right away but... anyone else know how this is?

I know there's 2 kinda people: those that can live their lives single for God, and those that seek a partner :/ I reeeeeeally doubt I could handle being single for my entire life >_<

But... course all my friends say "It'll happen soon" to at least finding that person (and easy for them to see because they are at least dating!) but then again, my friends just say "patience" (hard thign for me to do) and pretty much "if you have it in your heart to find someone, God will provide. It wasn't put there without reason." But then I fearfully look at all the divorces etc etc @_@.... fears pile up... just gotta trust in Him more with timing and everything >_< Just... also don't wanna be say in my 40s to get married and stuff :/

If I were to be married, it would be to continue the family line. This no longer registers in the mind of many Western people who have been, for the past half century, overwhelmingly self-absorbed. I am thoroughly Westernized, but the one Eastern aspect left in me is the desire to keep continuity with my ancestors.

Marriage isn't (solely) about love. Interaction with people requires love.
Job 7:16

I think marriage is pretty important. Like Rev. Doc said, they complete you. It's awesome somtimes seeing different couples, how where the guy is weak, the girl is strong...and visa versa. Plus, I think it shows how much you love someone if your willing to totaly commit to them. I know I plan on getting married...*shrug*

I if/when I get married, it will be for love, companionship, and for a family. Ingemar has a good point about family lines. I definatly want to continue my family line. I am a direct male line decendent of Sir Richard Scriven, (my family's name changed when they went to america) The Lord of Frodesly, in Shropshire England, and I am pretty darn proud of it.

Oh, and UCs post sounds like the beginning of one of those romance movies where the guy says "I am not getting married" and then some girl comes allong and 180 minutes later they are either engaged or married. (just what it made me think of.)

*blink* Because I'm in love. Why else WOULD most people want to marry? I guess there's a few more reasons I'd want to get married some day, when God has made it clear I've met the person He has in mind for me.

  • I'm in love. Not just loving someone, but being IN love with them.
  • I can't imagine my life without them.
  • I want to laugh with them, cry with them, work through life's hardest troubles WITH them.
  • I want to be the one to put a smile on their face and a song in their heart.
  • I want to continually grow in God with them.
  • I want to take care of them when they're sick.
  • I want to be the one they come home to while I'm cooking dinner for them.
  • I want to be there by their side and grow old with them. Should they fall severely ill and need someone to spoon feed them...I want to be that person.
  • I want them to complete me. I realize God completes me, but I think my future spouse will complete me in a different way.
  • Getting married IS giving up pretty much all of yourself...but if I I loved someone, I would want to get married to show them they're worth committing the rest of my life to.

Or maybe I'm just a hopeless girly romantic. *shrug*

I agree with what others have said. It's actually a blessing to be able to remain single and serve God, but most people can't do that. Marriage ISN'T for everyone, and I strongly admire those who can be alone.

My entire life I NEVER wanted to get married. Only in the past year has God changed my heart about that. Had this been this time last year, I would have said "I will never get married. I refuse." Now, I'm actually making a list of reasons I'd want to get married.

Therefore, the man and woman are not truly complete until they are joined together (become one flesh) even in a relationship to God.

Man and wife becoming one flesh does not mean that each is only partly human without the other. God is triune, yet each member is fully God.

Like UC, I plan to live a celibate life.

I do this in order to fully devote myself to God and his Church. The celibate life is a life of service. It allows me to follow at any time what ever the Lord or the people of God whom I serve ask of me.
