Would you be embarassed if your mom loved anime?

I'd love some input from the younger members of our group. (You "oldies" can feel free to participate too! ;)) Would you think it was great or would you be kind of embarassed if your mom loved anime as much or even more than you did?

I ask because I'm a mom with 2 young boys who both currently think it's wonderful that I love watching cartoons with them and trying to beat them at Playstation and other things that "normal" moms aren't in to. But as they get a bit older (into their teens), I don't want them to be embarassed that they have a weird mom! :) I gladly put up with all the razzing from my girlfriends who are also in their 40s and think I am totally strange, but I don't want my kids to think so. Would this kind of behavior from your mom embarass you or would you enjoy it if she honestly liked the same stuff you did?

Can you adopt me please? My mom works all the time and watches boring Korean Dramas that I don't understand...

Honestly I think that your sons will LIKE the fact that their mom isn't like most moms... who cares about embarassment, if they are embarassed will get over it and challenge you to matches and stuff

Embarassed? I'd be flippin' ecstatic, considering my mom's suspicious-to-slightly-hostile stance on anime and manga.

I think kids go through a point where they are slightly embarressed of their parents no matter what they do. But you surely wouldnt want to change your self just because some one might think differently of you. Even if its your kids. You love them for who they are and Im sure they will love you for just the same. (Not to mention all those time they got to stay up late and watch Toonami just because Mom wanted too also. ) ^_~

Yeah I'd think it'd be pretty cool having a mom like you. Just as long as you don't try and pander to them and try and make yourself cool. It really lowers kids respect level. Your kids will think your cool if you just act the way that God made you.

I would love it if my mom would stop being so negative against anime and manga. My mom and my sisters hat it. At least my dad can stand it.

My mom does not like anime. I think it would be cool if she did!

Unless you try to get them to let you hang out with their friends at the mall or something, I can't see why they should stress about it. Personally, I'd be rather pleased if my parents adopted my hobby of anime and manga. It would save a lot of embarassment and harrassment resulting from their not understanding it.

That said, I don't see any reason why it should embarrass them.

I can imagine a discussion between a mom and a daughter

Mom: "I think <insert male bishie-type male character> is really cute! AHHH I LOVE HIM"
Daughter: "MOM! HE'S MINE! YOU CAN'T HAVE HIM!!!"
Mom: "Heyhey IM THE PARENT! DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!!!"
Daughter: "But you're MARRIED!!!"
Mom: "I can file a divorce... or murder your father... or something..."
Daughter: "YOU'RE CRAZY!!!"
Mom: "NO! I JUST HAVE PASSIONATE LOVE FOR <Insert same bishie here>"
Daughter: "NO MOTHER! HE IS MINE!!!!!!!"
Mom: "GGGAAAHHH ARE YOU ASKING FOR A CHALLENGE?????"
Daughter: "MORRRTTAAALLL KOOOMMMMBBBAAAATTTT"
Mom: "HADUKEN!!"
Daughter: "+25 DEFENSE AGAINST RETRO VIDEO GAMES!!!!"
Mom: "OH NOES!!!!!11~~~"
Daughter: "SUPER HAPPY FRIENDS OF SPECIAL LOLLIPOP DANCE ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Mom: "WAHAHAH! I AM INVUNERABLE BECAUSE OF MY SUPER POWER MOM-LADY SKILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Daughter: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

No... better than the "what are you watching...you should be careful what you put in your mind... blah blah blah" that I normally get.

I agree with kaji that most kids are slightly embarassed by their parents no matter the case. Pesonally I think it would be kind of cool for a parent to share some similar interests in my hobbies, but at the same time weird.
Though it would probably make communication between a parent and child a bit stronger sharing similar interests

Heck yes.

Then I wouldn't be embarrased if she ever DOES watch it and gets the wrong impression.

I'm working on my mom. Shes liked what I've tricked her into watching. I think its would be cool to have a mom who watches that kind of stuff without haveing to be tricked into it. heh. =D

It would be fine with me. It would just mean less argument at the rental store.

(No way, I wouldn't. My mom is currently indiferrent to anime. She doesn't want to watch it, but she doesn't mind me watching anime, as long as it's clean enough for my age, and she trusts my judgement with that. Now, it would be awesome if she did like anime. She already has been dubbed a cool mom by many random people I've met because she plays video games. Not as much anymore, though once the new Zelda comes out, she will start again.)

My mom liking anime would be totally weird, but not embarrassing. I wish she did like it...she hates it.

*sigh* If my parents liked anime, they wouldn't freak out about Fruits Basket, which they did. In other words, I'd be ecstatic if my parents liked anime, hehe!

I think they might enjoy some series, but they just don't understand it...My mom already tried flipping through Rurouni and Magic Knight Rayearth, and I'm not sure if she'll ever understand how to read manga...-_- Maybe someday, when they're both more open to the idea, but until then, I'm quite alone in my esoteric hobby! Except for you guys, of course...n.n

If my parents liked anime I think I would be a little better off as far as listening to music in the car, My mom usually says, "Agh! What in the world is this? It sounds like Fun House music!" Which pisses me off sometimes but I try to ignore it. The only time I can say I would be embarrassed is if my mom was running around picking things up and trying to get other people's attention. But thankfully she never does this so I don't have to pretend I don't know her. My parents hate Anime so I guess I don't have a whole lot to worry about! ^^:;;

My mom's more of a laid back person.
So is my dad.
So usually there more into stuff like the Beatles, older things from the 60's to 70's time period.
I don't think there's a chance my parents would follow or actually enjoy an Anime.
But surprisingly to me, my mom actually watched the Japanese verison of InuYasha with my brother and I sometimes, while she's knitting or whatever. She sometimes gets into it and I feel a little more loosened up around her. Never once have I seen my dad actually watch an Anime though...Never.

I wouldn't be embarrassed. It would be pretty cool. My parents disprove of me watching Noir and other anime that's a bit violent. No problem with 24 (tv series) but because (Noir etc) is cartoon its not as expected. I'm 22 for crying out loud! Mature enough to use discernment to watch the anime I want.

That would be so awesome. I wouldn't have to listen to how much everybody hates my Jpop CDs and familly vacations would be to Anime Cons.

My two teenage kiddos have no problem at all with my anime tastes and I'm in my 40s. In fact my son goes to the convention now with me

Thanks so much for your input, everyone! I'm glad I won't have to go back to being a closet otaku so as not to embarass my boys! :)

Mr. Smartypants, consider yourself adopted! :) Plenty of room here in front of the tv for another anime watcher. But, are you really really good at the Playstation?? I'd hate to have another kid around here who could cream me at my favorite sword-fighting games! ;)

And Kaji, you are so right about most kids being embarassed about their parents at one point or another. If it's not about my anime watching, it'll be about the weird clothes I wear or something. (and NO, I do not wear weird clothes!! They're not weird to me anyway! ;))

And you had good points, That Dude and manga fanatic, about not pandering to them... I do try to downplay my "strange mom tendencies" around their friends so they don't ever think I'm trying to "fit in" with their buddies or something. If the boys want their friends to know, they can tell their friends themselves. (When my oldest son had a friend over, he showed off a couple of my gundam models. When the boy asked where he got them, my son said "oh, it's not my collection, it's my mom's!" The look on the boy's face was priceless! )

Eriana, I also like the jpop music, and I've gotten my boys to like it to. But I get the exact reaction from my husband that your mom gives you, so I know just how you feel!!

Natsumi Lam, I don't have any sailor moon jammies, but I do have a Gundam Wing and a Rouroni Kenshin shirt! Am I gonna have to ditch these? (noooooo! Not my precious mech shirt!! )

You bring up an interesting point, W4J... I will watch things on anime that I wouldn't watch in a live-action show, and I've wondered about my own motives on that one. I guess I'm on the flip side from your parents. I love those samurai shows with the bad guys getting sliced up into little pieces ... but I won't watch voilent movies or even shows like 24 or Law and Order SVU and things like that because they bother me too much. Hmmmm... I wonder myself if I should be so "casual" about the rough stuff I watch just because it's animated. (And no, I don't let my boys watch that stuff yet... I save my samurai shows for after they go to bed. :))

Family vacations to anime cons, wisedragon and Rev. Doc, huh?... Fun!! (Well, it would be family vacation MINUS dad here ... he is a good sport and tolerates my anime, but he still rolls his eyes at me sometimes, so I doubt I could drag him to a con! ) It may still be a few years before I take my boysies to a con, only because of the amount of skin showing everywhere you look there! :wow!: Wowsers! I've only been to one con, and it was a blast, but I was amazed by the number of nearly nude cosplaying girlies that I saw walking around. Yikes. 'Course, since my boys are only 7 and 10, this might be a good time to take them, cuz they would say "eww gross!" at this age!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to give me their input. I really appreciate it!

There are two questions at work here to my mind:

1) How would I feel if I had parents who liked anime?

2) How would I feel if MY parents liked anime?

The answer the first question is that I would be fine with it as long as it was not anything immoral (that would be creepy).

The answer to the second question is that I would be totally weirded out of my parents as they are liked anime. It would be so painfully out of character for them that it would drive me nuts. lol.
