Now here's a question I bet a lot of you have never thought of before, and neither I nor my parents have either until it somehow worked its way into our pre-church breakfast conversation this morning.

If a resident of Alberta is called an "Albertan" and a resident of Texas is called a "Texan" (just arbitrary examples here), what is a resident of Massachussetts called? We tried coming up with all kinds of things -- "Massachussettsians", "Massachussettsers", etc. -- and none of what we came up with sounded right!

A little help for this poor befuddled MelMak (and family) would be greatly appreciated...

On December 18, 1990, the Legislature decided that the people of the Commonwealth would be designated as Bay Staters. For the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

It must mean something when a state has to convene the Legislature to decide on the name to give their people... At least their tax dollars are hard at work.

I called them "people from massachussets"

I like my name better.

Now here is one for you how about Squamish.

I refer to people from Massachusetts as "Bob". Even the women.

Holland -> Hollander/Dutch dude/chick
France -> Frenchman/Frenchwoman
Japan -> Ninja

I think that they should be called Massa....No....Chusi....Those people from that really hard to spell state.

I never thought about that before...

how about someone from Delaware? Delawarians?
...from New York? New Yorkians?

I think that most state's residents are simply people from....whereever they are from...

New York -> New Yorker
Delaware -> Delawarthog

I have made my desicion: Residents of Massachusetts shall henceforth be dubbed "Massachusettsarianites".

Unless someone else knows the official name.

It can get pretty confusing when you get into city names.

Thar be so many different names for people from my city...Colorado Springs. I don't even know what we call ourselves. Colorado Springians. Springers. Coloradans from the springs.

For some reason that just doesn't sound right. Maybe we could go with Coloradans on Springs.
