It's okay, you're not the only one to fall for it. I did a google search for "mars closest to earth" and found a bunch of sites that say that it was in 2003, and that for some reason that email has recently been floating around. Said one person:

"It had no stated year, so some poor fool must have thought it referred to this year and started passing it along the grapevine. The lesson is to verify anything you receive on the internet before passing it on to others."
