What's the deal with clothing makers?

I was shopping at Wal-Mart (yes, I shop at Wal-Mart), and I couldn't help noticing that the men's shirts tended to be lower costing than the women's shirts.

What's the deal with that?

I bought a Boy's XL T-shirt, and it fit me as well as the lady's size I usually wear. It can't have taken any less fabric to make, because boy's shirts are longer than women's shirts. I don't think the quality is any better in Women's shirts, either.

Then I saw the grown Men's shirts, and they were on sale for 3.86 or something like that. They went up to XL Men's before the price went up another dollar. But I could not find any Women's shirts for under five dollars! And most were a lot more!!

Do they just think women are idiots who will pay more, or did I shop on a bad day, when guy's shirts were cheaper?

It is a common fact that women spend more on clothing than men do. (Aside from those "other" type of men, perhaps...).

Hey, this *is* capitalism. : ) ...Which I like...

Feh...

I'm fine with capitalism, but I think this is stupid...

Sexist. Just plan sexist. No matter where you go (in the U.S. anyway) women's clothing will always be more exspensive.

Question: What the heck is so great about a $100 bra? Um, even $30 is exspensive for something like that. Don't think a guy as ever paid anywhere near that much for a pair of boxers and an undershirt combined....

BWAHAHA SP XD;;; Anyways... I think it has to the with the fabric used in the clothing and the name that goes with it. Mens clothes tend to not have a big huge name behind em unless you get the good name brand.

Exactly. I know some women that think that clothes are nicer based on how exspencive they are. Its madness.

Yeah... I usually just buy stuff at Walmart... and as for underwear and stuff, I just buy the cheapest most comfortable stuff... I mean, it's just stupid...

Just buy men's shirts... As for pants, skirts, and dresses, I can't help you there...

Men's shirts cover more, anyhow. Get a long guy's shirt and [button="may be considered crude"]no more she-plumbers![/button] Whoo hoo! I'll be happier, anyhow.

For one thing, girls do buy more clothes then guys. But! Boys also have their problems with prices. Like video games, skateboards, sports equipment, and shoes. Boys also can find themselves being ripped off. Usually girls high heels cost less then a boys average shoes. Boys jewelery also can cost more then girls. But they buy them anyways! Just like girls buying clothes, they can spend to much on others goods as well, even if the other gender gets it for less. >^^<;

Supply and demand can be summarised easily.

Price = Demand/Supply

In other words increase the demand for any given item and the price will increase while increasing the supply has the opposite effect. Decreasing the supply will also increase the price while decreasing the demand will lower the price. That's supply and demand summarised. :)

Yeah, I took economics. So you're saying that there are more boys shirts than people who want to buy boy's shirts?

I think girls shirts are more expensive because they're not as straight. (no, I don't mean it like that, I'm talking geometrically. Don't read weird things into my posts. :))

Basically, the side seams of men's shirts are typically straight or nearly so, while a lot of women's shirts have curved side seams. This would be done to allow space for the breasts without giving the illusion that the gut sticks out the same amount (tent effect). Also, some women's shirts flare a little at the bottom, imposing some additional complexity on the seam. Finally, in discussing cheap clothing, the material is typically obtained very cheaply, meaning that the effort of transformation becomes a greater portion of the cost.

Of course there are. We guys like to keep two shirts around - in case we need to use one as a grease rag.

So that's why it sometimes looks like I have a beer gut!

I still think it sucks. And I'll still occasionally wear guy's shirts, if I like 'em. (However I've learned my lesson about funny ones. That won't happen again.)

I think it also has to do with the fact that men's fashions don't change as much as women's. There are only two times you find a clearance rack in the men's section, getting rid of the sweatshirts and long sleeves shirts at the beginning of spring/summer, and getting rid of the tank tops and shorts at the beginning of fall/winter. The women's clothes are constatly being cycled through, however, meaning that they have a shorter self life for the manufacturer to make a profit off them, therefore they charge more to make up for what ends up on the clearance rack.

XD;;;;;;; Well, um, the guys I know spend just about as much on clothing as I do. One of them bought a simple, white cotton t-shirt for $50 from Ralph Lauren... It looked the same as any generic white t-shirt, but he INSISTED that the material was nicer, and that it looked better... Eh.. well.. XD;

Besides the boys I know, I guess that, like the other have said, boys/men aren't as clothing shoppy as women are. Visiting a mall could show you that. Hmm... but I, personally, don't know why there would be such a difference in pricing. Less workmanship? XD;

:lol: Oh my goodness, you're RIGHT! o_o My dad has a shirt in his back pocket all the time when he's working in the garage! *laughing self to tears*

I find that girl's shirts fit me very poorly because of my scrawny Asian-ness combined with my longer torso - therefore, shirts that fit me right everywhere else usually show my stomach and I don't like that. T_T

Solution? :lol: I've started buying boy's anime t-shirts. x3; Something that my mom finds simply appaling, especially when I wear an Inu-Yasha shirt with a denim skirt.

The price of clothing has always been ridiculous. I hate to tell you guys this, but the blouses/tops/shirts at Walmart are cheap for a reason. They WILL fall apart. It's happened to me many, many times. So in the long run you're probably better off to just buy tops somewhere else. I have a hard time with not buying shirts there anymore. They're pretty cheap for the most part, but I know it'll just end up shrinking or falling apart at the seams. >_<

If you're going to buy shirts there, get the Faded Glory or George ones instead of No Boundaries, especially if you wear anything above a 14/Large. They size their stuff better. The No Boundaries stuff is cuter, but I've found that it has a tendency to fall apart easier, doesn't fit right, and shrinks. >.<

Although to be honest, even the clothes at stores like New York and Company are starting to be poorly made. Or maybe I just don't wash my clothes right, I don't know. I always follow the instructions...

One thing I always do is check the clearance racks. Sometimes you can find some awesome deals at the mall when they're trying to get rid of stuff! Also, try stores like Ross. You have to go when you have a lot of time to sift through everything though, because sometimes garments are damaged and stuff.

My boyfriend's clothes are more expensive than mine are because he has to buy at specialty stores like Casual Male Big and Tall. The cheapest pair of pants he can get is like 30 bucks. I think we got a shirt for 25 dollars once. >_<

T__T Aww.... That must be irritating... I've never had trouble with shirts. I just go to Forever 21, Abercrombie and Fitch, Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack, etc. and buy their size Small, and when something is particularly tight around the chest area, a Medium. o.o]Solution? :lol: I've started buying boy's anime t-shirts. x3; Something that my mom finds simply appaling, especially when I wear an Inu-Yasha shirt with a denim skirt.[/QUOTE]
......o.o Your mom... let's you wear.. boy shirts...? Anime shirts, too? T__T So.. lucky... My mother insists on making me dress... femininely. Like... femininely... Every now and then she's a bit more loose on what I can wear, but that just extends to wearing semi-baggy pants. @__@ I bet that must look so cute on you, Kokoro! X3

o.o;;;; I have a feeling that I've been paying too much for clothing all my life, then. XD;;;;;;;;;;; The average price of upper-garments that I've bought is about $20-25. Lower garments (pants/skirts) go from about $35-50. Jackets are around $70-100+. Then, there's purses... and shoes.. and uh.. XD;;;;;;;;;; Okay, so... >__>;;; Hmm.. the possibility of buying clothing for less is quite intriguing. o.o I could buy multiple shirts for the price of one. *__* oooo.... XD I'll be sure to check out Ross o.o and keep an eye out for these damaged pieces of clothing. *__* / Ja jang~

I am such a cheapskate about clothes, I'd never pay much for a shirt.

But actually, WalMart's clothes don't fall apart for me. I usually wreck my clothes other ways, like with bleach or getting stains on them. :(

I know a girl who's nearly my age, but he can always buy the Junior girls shirts. I'm so jealous!!! I don't know if it's more because it means she's small and purty, because they're cheaper, or because I like kids' designs.

I mean, honestly, bright, cute shirts are fun, but so many of them in "women's" sizes have snotty sayings on them. Or else they're cut so they show everything. I don't want to come over to complete strangers as some kind of sex-pot wannabe!

Why can't they use some of the cute designs they have for junior girls' shirts? Butterflies and things... cute, girly, but tasteful.

:rant:

Dude, and did you notice that rock bands always make girls shirts pink? I hate pink ,so I usaully end up getting a guy shirt for that reason too.

XDDD That's quite true... >__> Have you been to Hot Topic lately? The one in our mall is covered in PINK. It's everywhere. It kills me. Boys seem to be wearing a lot of pink lately, as well. I share your dislike for this obtrusive shade of red/white.
