when you get challenged to a fight. And dont accept or dont show up at the scheduled time to fight because you think its wrong and are not a coward. Yet when you dont show up for whats right you get lebeled a coward and are made fun of,treated unkindly and other stuff. That is biteing the dust. Now, to fight or to bite the dust.

bite the dust do you really want to fight someone?

Show up but don't fight. Tell them about Jesus and it'll probably freak them out enough to leave you alone for the better part of the year. :P

But seriously, I would show up and try to talk my way out of it. And I would really ask the person just what a fight would accomplish other then wasting both our times when we could just go out and watch a movie.

Ooorr, we can just go with the classic WWJD. And He would go, not raise a single finger, and love the guy like a brother. You'd be surprised what peace can do ^^

"Our battle is not against flesh and blood." It is a good thing to stand up for yourself and those weaker than you, but i don't think it has to get physical. It takes strength of character to take a hit and not fight back, but i think that is a better witness for Christ.
(but i am also not big on planning a fight. if they want to do something they can do it then and there).

hmm... If a friend is getting beat up or worse, I will stop it from happening to the best of my ability.

as for self defense, that I'm hazier on due to biblical reasons.

Hmm... Jesus had a label put on Him, was made fun of, spit on, beaten, and treated unkindly in many other ways. He could have "defended Himself" against His attackers, before and during His crucifixion. He had all the power in the universe... and He chose not to use it. That, to me, shows worlds more strength and courage than fighting back.

To be blunt... any idiot can throw a punch. It takes a secure, strong, courageous person to endure a punch when he knows he doesn't have to.

Funny... I just remembered a previous thread I posted in where my view might seem a little different. I am not against self-defense, and certainly not against the defense of others. But this attitude of "fighting to defend my manhood because otherwise people will laugh at me"... That is juvenile and prideful.

Beat him around a little to show you're better, then lose on purpose.

(Note: I'm assuming it's a 'fight', not real combat)

Wanting to fight and fighting are two different things of course. Its hard not to fight. Especially when you have anger problems(Which a lot of people do)

And what would be the point of that? Then you're losing on both counts... you lose the fight, and you lose your witness.

True... But we are not animals that cannot control our instincts, are we?

Self-control may not be easy, but most worthwhile things aren't easy.

I don't know, but never throw the first punch.

No no, people like that only understand violence. People like that believe you're right if you win the fight. Proving to them that your better, than give it up is something they don't get. They'll ask you why. Then you can explain to them why.

And if he's the better fighter and you lose? You've proven nothing. Nothing good, anyway.

People who really know how to fight don't do it for fun. I'm not saying that everyone should do it, I'm just saying I would.

I wouldnt have beat him around a bit, I probally wouldn't have even punched him. I Would've just parried his attacks and defended. I would have taken the course of action Phsycho Ann posted in mid combat. That way in mid combat he would understand more.

I've given this some consideration and I've decided it's better to bite the dust. Why fight when God is on our side?

Yah. My beliefs are known. I have nothing else to say. Though I certainly support those of us who don't support just going and beating up the other guy.

Sadly, I am infected with " knight in dented armor" syndrome. If I see one of my friends in trouble or someone's being a jerk to them, I feel it's my responsibilty to defend them. So far, I've kept people off their backs without a single blow. Words have a huge effect. BUT...if it comes to blows, it also becomes my responsibilty to win so I don't look stupid. My motto: Don't start anything, but once it's started, you sure as better come out on top.

I'm not too happy to see this topic brought up, but since it is, I may as well express this: my view and subsequently my definition of pacifisim have changed. I was discussing the subject with my father and, to put it crudely, he kicked my theological butt.

Of course, the point of the conversation was to learn, and that I did accomplish. I've gone over all passages on the subject, and revised my opinions according to my new knowledge.

My position as of now: I would never hurt and certainly never kill another individual. However, I have no qualms about defending myself in any other way.

Well, since this is a rather old topic, I bet there has been some resolution in the meantime. Did you fight or not, DragonSlayer?

I approve of fighting for self-defense, and even moreso for the defense of defenseless others. Of course I'm 19 now, so if I ever did get in a fight, I might be charged with assault.

I am interested in the subject from a philosophical and theological standpoint, particularly as this is one of the few issues on which I have ever lost a debate. :wow!:

Gentlemen... we still don't support theological debate. If this thread becomes this, I will lock it swiftly. Take it to pm if you're interested, as a certain respectable individual has already done.

hmm well this all depends on what the fight is about if you are standing up for something that you believe in or you are defending someone else than I would say yes fight the guy but if he is just some bully I would just show up and tell him like it is that you don't need to fight him because it wouldn't solve anything and that he is wrong for picking a fight also make sure you have witness there that would defend you if this guy decides to start swinging away and you have to defend your self or you can run and go tell an adult and hopefully get this guy to stop bothering you but you need people to back you up
