So, has anyone here read the greatest book (besides the Bible) of all time?

I've read it, although I'm not much of a fan. The first book's alright, but I don't care much for the others.

O'yeah, that's one of my favorite books! Unfortunately, I can't say Frank Herbert is my all-time favorite author, 'cause of the other books. The Dune games were pretty fun too. I hated the movie, though. It almost ruined the book for me.

Which one, the new or old one (the newer one that was a mini-series on the Sci-Fi channel follows the book rather closely).
The other books are still no my "to read" list, but I've heard that they aren't quite as good as the first.

If anyone has read House Atreidies/Harkkonen/Corriono and was put off by them, let me assure you that they are very terrible books and that Dune is many times better. Thank you.
I enjoy Dune because of the way Herbert made up an entire society.

Yeah, I don't like the "Other people working in dead author's universes" trend. Like the Foundation novels, and... Uh.. Yeah, the Dune Novels.
But the society thing... That's one of the awesome things about Dune, how when you read the whole series, you can watch the decline of the Fremen culture. Very sad, but kind of cool at the same time.

I don't know about anyone else, but here's my impression:
1. Herbert writes dune because he has a story to tell.
2. It make more money than he dreamt possible.
3. He decides he can make money writing books for a living.
Thus every other book comes out. And stinks.
Anyway, I LOVED the first book, read the next two and decided he was a sellout. That was the last time I touched the saga.

Almost done with the first book, enjoying it very much. Thanks for the warning about the others. =)

It took you two years to read the first book? SnowLeopard, you need to take a speed-reading course!

I saw the (older) movie several years back, and found it rather abhorrent (to say the least), which turned me off the books. I'll have to check them out sometime now, though.

Yes, I have read Lord of the Rings. HAHAH.
Does having played Dune II on my PC back in 1994 count? ;p

Oh! I loved the first novel, it was very interesting. I haven't read any of the others though...I heard they weren't as good, and was worried about being put off the book because of them.
I've seen both movies, and I have to say the mini-series was my favorite. the first movie...I just felt it didn't go into a lot of things, and I found myself watching the clock and thinking "Only one more hour....Only 45 more minutes...Only 30 more minutes...thank God, only 15 more minutes..." until it was over. Paul was pretty cute in the first one though; that's it's rather insignificant and single redeeming quality. ^_^

Frank Herbert's legacy has been carried out in books such as House Harkonnen and
House Atreides and I believe there's one more book either already out or due to be out soon.

I read the first book, 4 of the sequels, and finally just got tired of it (especially when the off-shoot books came out). I recall really liking the first one, but the sequels sometimes got to the point where I was looking for a wooden spoon to poke my eyes out with.
I liked what I saw of the SciFi mini-series, better special effects helped a lot. The old movie freaks me out a bit.

The old one was the one with Patrick Stewart in it wasn't it?

Funny this should come up; the series has been one of my many summer reading projects (for fun). I read the first two early in high school and decided to revisit them and keep going because they really made an impression on me. Though, I agree, Children and past don't seem to be quite as good. The Golden Path just gets kind of weird.
And I don't intend to see any of the movies. It's nothing against them in particular, but I can't see any film coming close to matching what the words do in my head.

Well, this has returned from the grave, but that's alright, because I can actually comment now, having read the series.
Apparently I am one of the few who didn't think that the first book was that much better than the rest. Overall I feel that Frank Herbert writes good science but poor fiction. None of his characters make me care about what happens to them and a great many make me hope that they'll die quickly. Another thing is best illustrated by example: I was reading about a surprise attack in the second to last book. Abruptly I stopped and realized that I had almost missed the beginning because it completely lacked excitement or tension, both as prose and as storytelling. I can't decide if I prefer that or those books that are completely detached from all of the action.
However, I do think it has many worthwhile elements and it is a series I am glad to have read (just the originals). The fact that most things are underdone occasionally works for it, including one of my favorite moments in science fiction literature:
When the Reverend Mothers realize that the overwhelming military force that has been devastating the known system is actually running from the more developed forces of the Scattering. It was a strong moment, and I liked the realization.
I've read the first 3 books. Of those I enjoyed Dune the most. I don't think he writes good fiction either BUT I think he has a great premise and many great ideas. I can see the huge influence it had on Nausicaa and Star Wars and other Science-fiction/Fantasy but it's not the easiest book to read. It rambles on a bit too much, the characters aren't all that likeable. That said I loved the story and the many creative ideas within the book.
