Who's pulled an all-nighter?

Postby mizuhara_fan » Fri Apr 29, 2005 9:36 pm

Who here has succeeded in pulling an all-nighter without crashing the next day? How did you manage to keep awake?

I sometimes relied on getting through the entire night typing up an essay that I procrasinated so long for. It isn't a smart idea to do, but sometimes the only way to get something done that was suppose to be done. Also during the summer I had a few days where I just played computer games the whole night while drinking nothing but caffeine (Red Bull and Amp specifically). I felt kind of light-headed the whole day, I guess it's a way of enjoy more time than you really ought to be spending in 24-hours. :)

Never. I believe I would die should I ever attempt such a feat.

Furthermore, its been proven that you retain information better if you sleep on it. With statistics behind me, I proudly sleep. ;)
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

(-__-)/ *raises hand*

I've attempted to pull an all-nighter 1 year ago. I sucked SO badly in statistics that it took me 11 hours to complete one of my weekly assignments and even then, I got a bad grade for it. (T__T)

I tried my best to stay awake but resistance was futile. I was as dead as a log in that Statistics class 5 minutes after handing in my assignment.

I pull all-nighters for at least five days in a row at the end of the school year, every year. I goof off for most of the year so I get way behind and then I have to make it up. So, this week, I'll be staying up until around 4 in the morning working. The worst time is that time from about 1 AM to 2 AM when sleepiness starts to hit, but then, after that passes after about 20 minutes, you can just work, work, work. Or, I can anyway. I hate them, but they've become a way of life for me. I'd much rather be sleeping. If only I'd be diligent throughout the regular school year...

I never pulled all-nighters as a high school student, but now that I am in college they have become a regular occurrence for me; there have been certain times when I would either get no sleep at all or very little sleep about one night every other week. A combination of caffeine and stress is usually more than sufficient to keep me awake for 24 or 30 hours at a time.

I accidentally pulled one. One time this past semester I had such a terrible dream I was only asleep for 45 minutes. I stayed up the rest of the night, got up and went to school the next day, and didn't crash til 10 pm that night. No caffeine....just by the grace of God alone I stayed awake through all of my classes and finished my homework. Still, not an experience I want to repeat.

I do it quite often.

Yup.

Once, a few years ago, I was up from 6 AM Friday morning until 2 AM Saturday night. That was also the night/day that I wrote one of the most infamous short stories of all time, the fabled YON THINGS.

I'll probably do it tonight. I gots me some Spirited Away to watch, and it's already 2AM.

I've done it, and it's not something my mom would like me to repeat.

The last time I pulled a true all-nighter was July of last year, when I came home from work, watched tv, and then helped my mom with the paper route the next morning.

This semester, I've learned the minimum I can sleep and continue to function for more than three days.is around four or five hours a night.

I've pulled off a few on Friday nights, where I just sit at my comp all night an lose track of time. Though one time, I pulled a Friday all nighter and forgot that on Sat I had to go to a unicycling expo with my club... (-__-), let's just say that I have never seen pink hippo's dancing other than that day. I was wasted for the next 3 days and I don't think I had more than 1 coherant sentense on the Sunday...

All nighters=good
All nighters with strenuous activity the next day=horrific!

Well, it certainly is not enjoyable, but I imagine that some people manage to function better without sleep than others.

That is not a good thing; some people actually become--temporarily--clinically insane after 72 hours without sleep (i.e. having hallucinations, etc.).

I've personally succeeded at going around 24-36 hours without sleep a couple of times and for the past month I go to sleep at 10am to wake up at 3pm.

As for all-nighters... yeah, even the times my sleeping schedule is normal, I tend to pull all-nighters regularly depending on things I need to get done. I believe it somewhat contributes to the fact I can fall asleep easily and quickly any time of the day at any place.

I can stay awake for two nights without getting too tired...but I can't be walking around. If I'm writing on the computer or, ah, roleplaying or just thinking, then I can go two nights, that I can. ^_^

I'm quite used to not sleeping for days straight, then go to bed when I feel like, and few hours later fine once again. Then some days I'm so tired at 10 hours isn't enough.

I remember staying up all night, next morning friend calls up to stay at his house so I do an all nighter there again, then next afternoon (yes, afternoon) head back home, stay until sun rises again the next morning then go to sleep. Did that quite often too, I have to say.

However, I wouldn't let anyone do such a thing if they didn't feel like doing it, such that they get suddenly tired.

I did one once for an undergraduate software engineering group project. We were working on trying to integrate our various components and work out the bugs for a robot path solving problem. It paid off at least since it worked in the end. I suppose technically it might not have been an "all-nighter" since I got about a half-hour of sleep while the focus was on somebody else's section.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Heh, hope you're gonna last and keep your sanity throughout the day. :)

You know as I read some of the posts here, I'm surprised anyone can make an entire "night" without sleep. Believe me, I've tried pulling a couple of all-nighters during the last semester, but they all seemed to fail on me at the 2-3 AM point. I've tried caffeine and using a Japanese "nerve-pinching" method to stay awake, but I just can't do it anymore.

I guess it's probably the fear of crashing the next day that makes me want to sleep during an attempted all-night session.

Haha yeah, I was feeling pretty loopy there for a while, but then I took a nice hot shower followed by a good meal and that helped. I'm still kinda grumpy though. Heh...but more than anything my reflexes are nil.

I still wanna read that.

All-nighters are fun. I used to do that a lot when I was little, because I had sleep problems (and still do, apparently). I didn't leave my room for fear of waking up my parents, so I just read every book I could reach and cleaned my room to the point that it scared me. If I did it now, I'd probably write all the fanfic I've been meaning to write and draw all the similar doujinshi.
Think happy thoughts.

i'm an architecture major, all-nighters are more-or-less manditory for survival in the course. i think i pulled at least 5 last semester, one right before homecoming, and i had to march in the parade with the band, and then play all day at the football game... not a good time, i kept nodding off everytime we did a march in place during the parade, and got left behind once.

i pulled a few this semester, but have gotten better at managing my time and working faster and better in what time i do have.

how do i handle it the next day - i don't i just end up being in a zone all day, a very zombie-like zone, and say very incoherent things and walk incredibly slowly. i find eating snacks off and on throughout the night helps me stay up, and prevents my from getting hungry, since i'm throwing off my body's eating cycle, and i have to drink a lot of liquids, i got dehydrated the last all-nighter i pulled and had severe leg cramps for days afterward.

I generally dislike staying up late. I just like to sleep. That and I am already tired by 10 at ight. I have actually gone to sleep at 8:30 p.m. without waking up super early or working hard. I guess I just tired.

I could of pulled a all-nighter lst knight cause I had 2 friends over but I had to go paintballing this mroning at 9 in the morning. SO I feel asleep at 2 and my 2 friends stayed up till 5 -_-;;

But I have never done a all-nighter by myself so it's usually with my friends or a church lock-ins.

Kinda funny info...on Fridays I turn anywhere from 9-12 at night and I dont need ot get up early saturday unless I have work. However Saturday night, I go to bed at 1 and I have to wake up for church at 8:30 a.m.

I've pulled a cupple, but I really only do it when I'm feeling depressed or down and out <_<;; I usually end up reading about three books in one night then drinking all the caffine I can to stay awake the next morning;; it's not good, I started doing horible in math the first time I ever did this, thankfully I'm doing alot better now, but I try not to do this anymore, even if I am not feeling well, although sometimes I still do it anyways.

Hmm, I'm not sure that I've ever pulled a true, full on all nighter. I have gone through about (at least) 10 nights over the last semester where I ended up with somewhere between 20 minutes and less than two hours of sleep. And I've gone to bed at sunrise a few times, with a morning class 2 or 3 hours off.

How do I deal with it? Well mentally, I don't, and my hands tend to shake alot the next day. But I can typically stay awake until the next night and refrain from crashing. One word for ya:

Espresso

Ei, I'm thinking I'll probably be pulling an allnighter tonight and tomorrow. I have a 2nd Year Applications portfolio due on Monday. Yup, I'm gonna keep the coffee pot running alllllll night..
