CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

G'day everyone! Just wanted to wish all the Aussies and Kiwis in CAA a good ANZAC Day. Anyone here had relations that were in any of the WWs? Both my grandfathers were... my pop in the navy as a sonar operator, and my grandad (mums dad) was in the army (common infantry man serving around Fiji).

One of my grandfathers was stationed in World War 2 at Paupa New Guinea (Port Morsby I think it was). He told us that the most memorable thing of his time there was when he and a few of his comrades were heading to church one day in an army truck and a small bomb dropped alongside them (some distance away). The truck was blown away and flipped into a ditch. The impact formed a huge hole, but they weren't badly hurt, just some cuts and bruises. I reckon God protected them that day!

Strewth! Good thing that God was looking out for em, otherwise you wouldn't exactly be here eh?
My pop rarely talks about the war, but the Australian War Memorial were asking all the veterans if they could tape their stories, so that future generations can catch a glimpse of what war was like. So, pop consented to be interviewed and he sent us a copy of the tapes.

He was on a little minesweeper (corvette) called the HMAS Lismore. He was responsible for a device rather like the sonar. His ship went everywhere from the Mediterranean to the Japanese coast; he even saved his ship from a tornado
Though, I now know why he doesnt talk about it very much... he saw alot of disturbing things.

One of my favourite stories of his, however, is when he was helping survivors into the boat alongside another ship. As he was pulling guys out of the water, he saw his brother on the other boat so he gave him a shout The other brother didn't even know that he was in the war, so imagine his surprise when he saw my pop waving to him from the boat

Btw, did you Aussie guys watch the ANZAC series that was on Fri-Sun? I did, and I nearly bawled my eyes out tonight

That's really interesting Talame! I'm not into World War things or whatever but people's personal stories of what happened to them can be very interesting, informative and saddening.

Yes, very good. A fair bit of swearing but then again what else do you expect from an Australian war film? I think my favourite character was Paul Hogan's (ie Pat Cleary).
Today was the finale, and one of the originals died (hence the bawling out of eyes).

[spoiler] It was Martin Barrington, the guy that is in love with the nurse. O, he proposed to the nurse (and she said yes) shortly before he died. Aint that always the case?! [/spoiler]

My Uncle Carl before he was killed in Quang Nam was on a Combined Action Program with some Australians at Nui Dat I think it was. So I have alot of respect for your serviceman over there. God bless your veterans.

You know... that actually reminds me of a story. I dont know if this is true, but if it is then its the best prank in history

There was an Australian and American ship at a dock during one of the wars. The Americans had orders to shoot anyone that tried to board without permission. The Australians, after having a few drinks at the local pub, decided to pull a prank on the Yankies, so at night they snuck onto the ship. In the morning, the Americans were shocked to discover an Australian flag flying over their ship

My Great-uncle fought somewhere, my grandfather stayed in Perth as a Pastor, and on the other side my grandfather was in the war aswell, and his brother died somewhere near Stallingrad, we don't really know where.

I didn't see ANZAC on TV, but I have see it before on Video. Its one of my faviroute war-'movies'. It is really sad and realistic, because like you said Talame, pretty much all the originals don't make it and all their lives just get torn apart both on the front and at home. War sucks. It just kills everyones lives, and destroys generations hopes and dreams.
