Earthquake in Tokyo...

... and I was there! News link here.

Traveling in Japan this week, I was sitting in an Internet Cafe in Shibuya this morning when my cubicle started moving around. It wasn't much, but it was noticeable. It lasted for only a few seconds, and was kind of like being in rough water in a boat. I thought, initially, that somebody was intentionally rocking the line of cubicles back and forth (the Internet Cafes here in Japan double as inexpensive alternatives to hotel rooms - really quite impressive - but I digress...).

It wasn't until later today, when an aftershock hit (again, the same wavy feeling) that I thought it might be an earthquake.

No damage or injuries I could see, but a lot of people are talking about it.

Trip pictures to follow once I can find a photo editor to trim down some of my photos so they can get posted on my website...

thats awsome. I myself experienced a minor earthquake recently. While in Nicaragua there was a very minor earthquake in our area. some of my friends felt it, but I was actually laughing at the time and didnt feel it. It wasnt very strong.

Man, I wish I could just say, "When I was in Tokyo the other day..."
But, as I recall, earthquakes are quite normal there. I am glad that they are usually mild!

I wonder if it might have been an aftershock from the Sumatra earthquake that
triggered it.
One of my sisters lives up in North Pole,Alaska and up there earthquakes are pretty much a normal course of events. We lived through a few minor ones when
we lived in Anchorage.

I have a friend on the Tokyo Fire Service over there in the EMS training division. I will have to email him and find out how things were for him and his family and find out what he had to do when everything started shaking.

Over everything else in this thread, I read "I was sitting in an Internet Cafe in Shibuya." That makes the whole story that much more cool.

there's been a few big earthquakes there lately. one pretty bad one last year as far as i remember. a bunch of people were homeless. There have also been a lot of tropical storms. hopefully there won't be too many more.
