In all seriousness, the actions of anime fans are really not more extreme than those of dedicated fans of other things.

It isn't terribly uncommon for Star Wars fans to go to conventions in costume.

I have heard there is an organization somewhere of people who either are learning or have learned to speak Klingon, and at least one book has been published about the languages of Middle Earth.

Fans of American comics do the same thing.

And it is a perfectly natural response, when you enjoy something, to want to share the experience with others, because doing so can heighten your own enjoyment and (if enough people are involved) foster a sense of community.

I think its because with anime it isn't usually a "well its okay" sorta hobby. Buying anime dvds and manga in america is rather expensive, and you kinda have to devote a part of your money to that. That partly weasels out the people who aren't really "devoted" (for lack of a better term) and those who are left are the ones who are really into it. Then they act like hardcore fans usually do and do all these "strange" things which really aren't all that strange.
And if something can inspire you to want to learn a language, then maybe we can work this into the HORRIBLE US educational system and actually get us past knowing only one language =.=;; us silly non-bilingual americans...

Or a language that isn't Spanish or French. Jeez.

Cosplay.... Nah, have no interest in doing so
Role Play... I don't play roleplaying unless it's for a gaming system. I don't play things like D&D or other types Roleplaying
Fanguy/Fangirl... what's that?
Try to learn Japanese... umm, maybe one day. Not because of anime in itself, but because I think the culture is interesting. Though, I would rather learn Korean first.
Draw anime... Well, I do this because the art style is cool.
Buy anime... Well, I have to watch anime to be an anime fan.
Try to get others to watch it... I gave up on that. I watch it because I want to, I don't force it on others. If they are interested, I don't mind sharing. But I don't make that effort to get people to watch it.
So to sum it up, I don't do roleplaying, cosplay, or try to get others to watch it.
I think many do these things to make them feel more of an anime fan then another- much like a contest. In my opinion, wanting or knowing to speak/read japanese doesn't make them a better fan then the guy who just likes to watch it. It's not a contest to know more facts or whatever, it's just wanting to watch anime and enjoy it. For me I don't do many things most anime fans do, but that doesn't make me less of a fan.

It's called being a Fanatic hence the name Fan.
Of course if you really want strange you have to go to the Star Trek
fans.I mean the DIE HARD Star Trek fans...the ones that end up in the
documentary TREKKIES..Now THOSE are really,REALLY disturbed people!
Look on the bright side at least no otaku,as far as I know as ever gone
to jury duty wearing a ZAFT or Earth Force's uniform from Gundam Seed!

Ever hear the one of the otaku who was building a 1:1 model of a Gundam?
No lie.

It had to be someone dressed as a Klingon too!
Personally I'd love to see someone dressed as Jessie and James from
Team Rocket go in and see how much confusion they could make at a
Star Trek Con!

THAT WOULD BE SOOOOOOO FUN!!! they would be all "Get rid of the sword," and i know i would answer "But.. it can't cut.." they would be "I don't care get it out of here or you will be held for contempt. " Me: "If you wish to taste carpet feel free to arrest me.." HAHA!!
Anyways, good answers.. ^_^ I agree.. being a fan takes a lot of dedication since the prices are so high.. not to mention the animation and art style is AWESOME!!
and no sephiroth, My avatar is Yuki Sohma from Fruits Basket.. he is in his "New year" Out fit i think.. Isn't her pretty?! *Huggles him*

fangirl:...guilty *sigh* kenshin my dear...
learn Japanese: i failed at it, but still guilty
draw anime: VERY EXTREMELY GUILTY
buy manga/anime: does it count if you're too broke to buy it but go to the bookshop on nearly every weekend and spend hours in the floor of the manga section reading and reading until people start staring?
try to get others to watch it: the only one im totally free of charges on
ive got two explanations (here i go trying to get all philosophical)
i guess its cuz when you love something and get happiness from it, you want to share that happiness and love with others.
OR(i like this explanation better)
just cuz. we dont need a reason.

Anime fandom needs no explanation. It's a very fun, very addicting interest, and is great in many ways. The fan base it has buillt is certainly not for nothing.
