Actually, it literally IS a holiday manufactured by candy companies. In Japan, women give men chocolate for Valentines day (giri [obligation] choko to coworkers or honme (true feeling) choko for men they like). On White Day (invented by Japanese candy sellers) the men who receive chocolate from girls are supposed to return the favor.

Urusei Yatsura has a hillarious misinterpretation of the custom on DVD16.
