It's courtwarming night tonight at my school, and i was sickened by the lack of school spirit in my school.

Okay, i wasn't jumping off my feet, but at least I was participating. People were being downright rude, like when they booed at the Dance Force. I know that our school don't win a lot of games, but STILL!

Does anyone else have this problem, or am I stuck with a bunch of losers? It was really frustrating, because the student body president was trying really hard to make a good pep assembly, and how was he rewarded? With disrespectful students, that's how. Grrrrrrrrrr.

I don't boo people, but I'm not the most spirited person either. I don't do the school spirit thing, I guess. I can't find myself getting excited over stuff like that, but I'd never be downright rude to anyone. I'm sorry to hear that you have such disrespectful people at your school - my high school has its share of "unspirited" people, but I've never seen anyone boo at an assembly.

The "Dance Force" sounds like some kinda unseen thing that makes people want to get up and do the tango, or something. But, you're not alone. In my school, it seems that the ninth graders think it's not cool to have school spirit. Especially this core group of people that really get on me nerves.

I never had school spirit. ._. I'm not into sports and all that. I was at school to graduate, not cheer for the football team which was overfunded. I could have cared less. >_>;

I didn't boo at assemblies or anything, but still. I didn't see the point and still don't, really. o_o;

btw, what in the world is "courtwarming"?

Back in Highschool our school wasn't too big on school spirit either. A pep rally was more of an excuse to get out of class. ALthough I could have been more spirited, it just wasn't me. I play a lot of sports but it was hard for me to cheer for school events I don't attend or have any interest in. Though, I would never boo a program.

The Dance Force is what we call our dance team, although watching them makes me want to dance as well. Just not the tango, I can't tango.

Courtwarming is the dance that we hold to honor the winter sports (basketball and wrestling). We have our Courtwarming spirit week, the pep assembly, the game, and then the dance. Usually not as big as homecoming, but I look forward to it because I like to dance, and this is one of the few times in which I'm able to.

I came to tell you that our varsity girls and boys both lost their games tonight. I can see why the students don't have spirit, but at least they can be respectful. I didn't see the humiliating losses, for I was at a bake sale right outside the gym doors for four hours straight.

Like everyone who has already responded, I can't say that I had a great deal of school spirit in high school. However, I do sympathize with you in your irritation at the disrespect shown by your fellow students. Even in college I experience, on occasion, some similar events. I am currently in a class that I do not particularly enjoy, and there is often a distinct lack of attention paid to the professor--like students continuing to talk while he takes attendance. While I do not enjoy this particular professor's lectures any more than the other students in the class do, I feel that even a less than excellent professor deserves the basic level of respect demonstrated by actually listening to him when he speaks.

I don't have a great deal of school spirit, mainly because the type of people that go to my school. o_o They kind of ruined it for me.
But I would never boo anyone! At least the people who don't get into that sort of thing can have respect for them! I know from experience that people put alot of hard work into dance routines, and practicing for a game! I admire the people who can do that! *has no athletic abilities* ^^;

Yea, our grade's pretty unspirited. Kinda shows too. We have
'spirit points', and so many points are given to the grades, depending on how many people in the grade participate.
And well, we're practically dead last.
I try to participate, but I'm not one to 'stand out' in the crowd. That is, unless I get REALLY into it. (Or I get mad and exert myself)
But someone booing someone else! I'd slap those guys! Knock some sense into them!!

When I was in school, I wasn't very 'spirited' either. They placed too much emphasis on sport, in my opinion, than on what really matter (again my opinion) in school... i.e. grades. It seemed that people who did really well at work got a pat on the ack while those good at sport got paraded around everywhere.

Very true Talame. On Sports Day I would always jump around yelling out our team's name etc, because I couldn't do sport for peanuts and wanted to make up for it a little. In other circumstances I tried to have a bit of school spirit, but I wasn't exactly jumping around doing starjumps and the whole cheerleader thing or what have you.

In terms of school spirit, they can't exactly get you 'fired up' for something you don't enjoy. That's the way I see it. Its not that important really, I'd say its pretty lame. But then it is annoying to have people of the other extreme too.

I have quite a bit of school spirit for my various alma maters. Of course, I had pretty positive experiences in Jr. High, HS, and college. I had pretty good school spirit when I was attending those schools as well, even though I never played the "big" sports (basketball, football, baseball).

I agree with those who have said that academics should come before athletics in any school setting. However, I believe that athletics can and should be an important part of a school's identity. They help give students in the school and people of the community a common interest, a rallying point, and a sense of community. Not to take anything away from academics, but to me grades are usually more personal. Athletics give people affiliated with a school a chance to experience something together, something that is emotionally charged and brings people together with a common goal. Of course, other extracurriculars can have the same effect.

I don't feel people should try to belong or fit in mindlessly, but I do believe it is important to feel a connectedness to one's school and community. Just my opinion on the matter. ^___^

I went to three different high schools.The first was a medium sized small town high school in north Idaho(note:Pre-Aryan Nations,this was in the
'70s waaaayyyy before the Neo-Nazis came in and spoiled Idaho's reputation for everyone living there);the second was a larger city public school in Anchorage and the final one was a small Christian school north of Seattle.
What I found from my experience in all three is that it doesn't matter where you go to school you're always going to have some people who are more gung ho about school spirit than others.

I do think that academics is more important than sports. I don't care if a person doesn't have any school spirit, but at least have some respect for the people who do have sports as a major part of their lives. I'm glad I'm not alone on this opinion.

I wonder if there are any sportsy people here who have anything they want to add to this. I want to know what they think. i played basketball for a couple of years, but I never really got into it, so i don't think I count.

Our school kinda rotates around basketball, but not as much as last year (or so I've heard) During spirit weeks almost everyone participates and its really fun. But personally, I'm not much of a school spirit person... I haven't even been to the basketball games. I stat for wrestling instead ^^ Almost all the wrestling guys are much nicer than the basketball guys. You spend so much time with the other people in wrestling its like you're one family. We love all of the moms and (at our school at least) the stat girls are all really nice.

I never had school spirit. I would not have been so rude as to have booed, but I was a low level trouble maker, doing things such as campaigning to get some cartoon character elected as school president (Bill The Cat, if you're curious)-- and came close to winning; or after attending an anti-tobacco rally, call out loudly while leaving "ANyone Got a light?"

Basically just low-level rebellion against these mandatory activities.

My school is a sports school hands down. Football is our forte, followed by basketball. To give ya an idea we were really dissapointed our team didn't pull a fourth state championship in a row last football season... I'd say I have a good amount of school spirit if I get into it. I don't really bounce around the walls but I can get pretty charged.

school spirit is fun! some people just don't get into it.... so sad....
