I thought Chinese New Year was February 9th. <.< >.> Well, my friends are celebrating it on the 12th.

I might try to wear something red and new for the first 3 days of Chinese New Year for fun. But I'm definitely not gonna get any 'ang pows.' T_T

Happy Chinese New Year!

My college celebrated it by having a big Chinese New Year's feast. It wasn't all that great, but fun nonetheless. They decorated the dining area with some Chinese signs, but because we're culturally ignorant Americans, some of the signs were upside-down, much to the amusement of our Chinese friends.

Which got me thinking. What year of the Chinese zodiac were you born in? I was born in the year of the rabbit. Apparently I'm supposed to be lucky and popular.

Hey dont say that! My brother is having Chinese newyear on his birthday this year! And my Dad! (Born on same day) And it my brothers zodaic sign!! o_O

I'm getting into the spirit too. My eyes will be (bloodshot) red for Chinese New Year. ^^

I learned more about Chinese New Year traditions yesterday at the Mandarin Chinese language class I attend Saturday mornings. We got to sample a few foods who's names sound like good fortune phrases (and therefore are sort of fortunate to eat).

Actually some signs can be upside down. For example "chun", Spring, can be put upside down to represent that it has already arrived (even though it hasn't yet - I guess it is just a good sign).

To go along with the festive season, I have attached a sketch I drew while waiting for a ride. The words above the people's head say "Zhe shi wo men de wan fan!" translated as "This is our dinner!" It what I think of whenever I see a rooster decoration. I noticed...I only draw these four characters when a major Chinese festival, excluding the Hungry Ghost, comes.


(The word for "upside down" is "dao", which means arrive, guide, or conduct. Putting a word upside down would mean you want whatever is written to come in. This is a Chinese urban legend that has grown into a custom.)

Yeah, but when the Chinese international students are pointing some of the signs and laughing, that's generally an indicator that it's the wrong way up...

That would be true, ya... I just figured I'd mention that it isn't alltogether unheard of. And thanks, Vampi, for a little more info on this upside-down custom.
