for the past day or so I've been hearing this weird sound out of my right ear only. it sounds like heavy breathing or something like that...it's low and dull. I don't hear it constantly. it's been peaking and then stopping and then starting again. am I losing my hearing?

Do you have difficulty hearing out of that ear in general?
The ear's own blood flow can sometimes be audible, but it shouldn't be persistent.

I can still hear out of it, I just also hear that sound on top of whatever I'm hearing. this didn't start until yesterday morning sometime. the night before I was out walking around at 1am in the cold (long story). so maybe I'm just getting a cold or something...either way I'm going to the doc if this doesn't stop soon.

If you have fluid in your ear "tympanic effusion" you can also hear strange noises on top, although it often works to muffle noises as well. You can get this if you have any kind of upper respiratory infection (viral or whatever), and usually goes away when the other symptoms do; rarely does the fluid need to be drained.

Couldn't this be also tinnitus? Usually this goes away pretty fast but if it stays see a doctor.
A friend of mine had it for some weeks because of stress (or so the doctors say). So try and relax a bit

I got something like that once. It was when I was swimming all the time, it was close to swimmers ear. You might have that, cause you can get it, even if you don't swim.
I had it for about a month, then I got stuff to drop in my ear, and it finally went away.
I think you should go to the doctor too.

Correct, tinnitus is usually high pitched. Doesn't have to be, but this doesn't "sound" (no pun intended) like tinnitus to me.

For me I have a huge hole in my ear drum that will not close. I need surgery on it... well anyways, usually I hear the wind around me more then usual, kind of like the sound of wind blowing into a cave, a huge empty space sound. The wind echos in my ear. I It's can be high pitched or dull at times. Actually, it's not only wind, sometimes it just happens whenever, like when I listen to music. I would hear all the electronic sounds echoing. Do you think it's possible you have a hole in your ear drum?

or it could be a infection

Perhaps, I got the hole through an infection. It would get filled with liquid and if I pulled my ear in any direction I would hear weird liquid sounds; like smushy sounds. THen sometimes, when it drained, it drained out of my canal and that would also cause weird noises. Also, high pitched sounds would happen when the liquid would sometimes clog my ear then unclog randomly.
Matter of fact, I just got done taking antibiotics of my 3rd ear infection in 2 1/2 years. Go figure....

Long ago whenever I took showers, water use to get in my ear, and I could hear the Ocean...
Wow, really?? That's funny, I didn't hear the Ocean, I heard you singing.
It's good having a doctor on the forum. ^_^
I'll hear ringing sometimes but I think it's earwax or something...never heard breathing though...

I still get water in my ears. It's not fun at all.
