After watching a episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex where a vertual chat room was basically lik a debate amoung computer generated images in a holographic, virtual setting. It was very intresting and got me thinking...

What will technology be like in the next 10, 20,or 50 years (unless Christ comes back that is)?? It's fun to think about.

Who knows..................since technology seems to grow faster and faster by every year who knows if that kind of technology could exist in a short period of time.

Sliding doors that open on their own accord, so people don't run through them and get badly injured (heard too many stories of this).

I don't see us having flying cars in the near future.

Who needs flying cars when you can take a bus! Or if you're going far, what's wrong with aeroplanes or trains? They work now, and they won't go until something new comes out, which I don't think there will be any.

I take just everything will be 'upgraded' in next 10~20 years. Nothing major, just faster computers, safer cars or with new environment friendly engines, more efficient aeroplanes that uses less fuel and carries more people, etc etc. They'll probably look different than designs right now, so they'll look futuristic, but I seriously doubt their roles will change much.

Afterall, we still use knives. When did we start using that again?

Technology... I love it, yet it scares me to think about how it will be used in the future... They're already implanting computer chips in animals...

I expect that there will be some significant technological advances, although it's difficult to really predict where the big things are going to be.

I expect that we will see a phasing out of the internal combustion engine in favour of hybrid/electric veichles. Significant advances are being made in this area already, so such cars will soon become viable options. I also expect that some currently existing technologies will become much more ubiqitous, as they replace the existing infrastructure.

Other areas where major technological advances will occur:
Wireless- Cognitive radio will be the big thing within a few years.
MEMS (Microelectronic machines)
"smart materials"- projects like electronic paper are already being tested.

Biologically based machines- I expect that there will be a number of technologies that see a meshing of the biological and electronic.

Biologically inspired engineering- There will be a greater move to understand aspects of human and other life systems in order to gain insights for engineering problems.

Those are my guesses, anyways for those interested in current developments see this month's issue of IEEE Spectrum.

I worry about technologies that fit Revelation and are likely to bring down God's wrath. People have a bad habit of "doing it because I can", and even though no new technologies that are groundbreaking may appear, it's likely people will apply the ones we have in new ways that are increasingly ethically suspect and dangerous.

the Technology in this world is going fast. about 100 years ago the Right Brothers invented the first airplane. now there are rocket ships going to space and they are trying to go faster in space. so ya it is kinda freeky how fast the technology is going.

Realistically though, I wouldn't put much stock in conspiracy theories, or eschatological projections.

Personally, I'd like to see teleportation if that would be possible. Another awesome thing would be able to hook up into the cable or wireless internet wherever you are at using some kind of portable computer type thing. That or have sunglasses that can hook up into the internet.

I don't think those would ever come true but I think it's fun to think about this instead of pointing out the obvious.

My predictions
Technology will either make huge leaps that we can't even contemplate yet, and may not want to once they hit, or we will just keep tweaking what we have, making it clearer, smaller, more effcient, ect. The latter is most likely because technology is a buisness and most buisnesses are unwilling to take the huge financial risks to put brand new infrastructure in place to estblish most new technology. Take alternate energy cars. If no one builds stations to fuel them at, nobody buys the cars because there is no where to fill them up. No one builds the stations because there are no cars being bought. A vicious circle that no one wants to fix because the corporations are making money just fine as it is.

As far as the conspiracy theories go, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean their NOT out to get you.

I'd like to know where you think all of these supposed cures come from and where they are right now? The only scientists, researchers, etc I've heard saying there's a possible cure for AIDS say it comes from stem cell research. The same idiots who say it will eventually be able to cure the common cold, cancer, herpes, and other thus far incurable diseases. While stem cell research is as much a theoretical science as teleportation and lightspeed travel...

First to comment about the above... teleportation has been been done... but only on REALLY REALLY small particles at MIT or CALTECH or something like that, last I heard. Even this required tons of mathmatics. As for lightspeed travel... well 100 years after Einsteins paper people still don't get it, you can't go faster than light. And there is no five mile over rule either! That means no theories, only hypothesis based off of unknown or obscure evidence that I certainly haven't seen.

Now for my own additions, biology probobly will be a very large field no doubt... However all this talk about the end of the golden age of physics, the beggining of the biological golden age and biological computers seems a little over-hyped to me. I couldn't let that happen after all, me being a physicist ha ha HA! Actually I believe the best bet exists in light computers.

The future technological advances that I could think of will probobly revolve around bringing back much of the drained human experiences that no longer exist. For instance people today dive out of airplanes, raft down rivers and climb mountains for fun. And if you're too fat or lazy to do that (like me) you play video games in order to make up for the lost experience of the unknown in your enviroement. Our parents used movie theaters. Cities, particularly the suburbs aren't the best places to experience "excitement" and or "the unknown". Given this lack we almost yearn for danger with the possibility of discovering the unknown. After all, in a sad sort of way we live protected within our cities from all threats expect other people and ourselves and the most likely way we'll die isn't through working to find some mystery of the universe, but rather trying to get to some useless office job, only to be killed by someone just being stupid or by eating too many hamburgers... sad isn't it? At the same time these enviroments provide no new stimulae for us to be curious about and thus like an old toy we get tired with it. This I believe is what drives the economy, because we must constantly have new stimulae as we get bored with old stimulae. Video games were particularly effective because they required the user's imput while displaying hours and hours of new stimulus for our minds to play with. This is probobly why game controllers have gotten more and more complex over the years, and also why games have gotten longer and graphics more detailed. It was to provide the user with more stimulus for our bored minds. In the future I believe that we will produce full imersion technology or find some other technology that will replace this to create even more immersive enviroments that yield artificial "unknowns".

The inventions of the future will directly reflect our needs in the future. Therefore it is immpossible to acuratly predict what the future will bring except for advancements in what already exists.

Or we may destroy all our civilization's accomplishments during WW3.

I once saw an infomercial for a book "Natural cures they don't want you to know about" supposedly in goes into detail about all of the "health freedoms" that are being restricted in America.

In my honest opinion, there will be advances in technology but I don't think as dramatic as many think. I mean, in the 1960's everyone expected us to be living much like the Jetsons by year 2000. Cars will still be powered by either gas or electricity. I personally don't think we will make significant movements towards outerspace like living there or anything ... I even think exploration will still be limited much like it is today, just a bit better.

I think more things will be concentrated more on convenience goods (pointless or useless technology) rather then practicality.
Though, perhaps there will be more advances made towards creating androids. That'll be odd...

i also agree with volt, there is much that we are not allowed to be aware of

ex. the first post in this thread mentions ghost in the shell, in which someone can have a type of synthesized telepathy by means of the computer parts of the body. well, what if you had a series of receiver implanted in your brain that could read what your brain was doing and you could use this to control things like certain types of machinery, computers, that kind of thing, and then all you would have to do is put a chip somewhere on your body (possibly right hand) that could contain all of you data or at least a special number with which someone could access all of your data from a special database somewhere, and on top of that, all that you'd have to do is plug yourself in, or hit a button somewhere, and poof* you're in a game somewhere fighting a monster, or you're cyber-paintballing against your friends, or even reading a book with your eyes closed

this i believe is in the development stages even as i type, i saw on the news about a year ago a story about monkey that had these receivers attached to its head to do some sort of experiment, well the monkey did as it was instructed to do, which was pull this joystick in various directions to get a mechanical arm to work using the receivers, then the monkey put his arm down and used just his mind through the receivers to control the arm, and the newscaster mentioned that they were developing it as a possible way to help paralyzed people regain mobility, and i thought to myself, yeah and i bet the military would some a toy like that, pair that with the unmanned flying vehicle technology and you've almost got the system that dorothy catalonia used against the gundams in the gundam wing series, not only that but they have these video games now that when you attach these certain gloves (or bracelets) and ankle pieces, the game can follow your movements and the character on the screen will do the same thing (at least as close as it is programmed to do), then there's the itoy thing that just needs to follow your movements with a camera to respond, personally, i think we may just end up with a mech of some sort in someone's military before Jesus returns to claim His throne, again it's just my opinion though, if anyone else has any thoughts on this, i'd appreciate hearing them
