Ridiculously large weapons, anyone?

Postby Hitokiri » Wed Jan 05, 2005 9:13 pm

Anyone a fan of ridiculously large weapons such as Sano's Zanbattou, Zabuza's Neck-Cleaver, or Sepheroth's Scythe thing?

How bout in real life?

I love em. I used to have a zanbatou I made out of wood (i think it was 8 feet long...the balde with a added 5 feet handle). I was fairly good at it until it broke in battle. I could wield it with one hand and the entire weapon weighed around 10-15 pounds.

So now I'm making a new one with will be not as bulky but the blade will be around 10 feet in length with a 5-6 handle. This time, it will be carved out of one large piece of wood instead of the large piece of wood crafted into a blade and then a broom handle inserted into it. That's how it broke, where th eblade met the handle.

I also like using broadswords as well.

I like a good, medieval broadsword that the Knights of Europe used to use or a rapier which is easier to use. Then again a diesel truck can be affective too for crushing your attacker, but they're rather lumbering. And you need a licence for that one.

Yeah, like smarty pants I prefer small, quick weapons. Some bulky massive weapons I thought were pretty cool (Vash's coughity cough cough.), but generally I like smaller stuff. I guess when I see a huge sword, I can't help but think of a Final Fantasy 7 spin off.

Katana's all the way

Got that right... Big weapson are nice and all, but the smaller and lighter they are, the faster they go. Also one would be able to get more hits in. I would have to agree, Katana's all the way.

Having a weapon that's 6 feet plus is kind of well...errr. Reminds me of that fight against Sano and Kenshin. Large weapsons have the distance but are limted in motion.

Big weapsons huh? You didn't say it couldn't be a gun. Try this on for size.

I like big weapons because they've always got more range than small ones unless you're talking about guns.

I'd rather play a character like Nightmare in soul calibur 2 than a character like Talim. :) Big powerful weapons are the best. :thumb:

I'm a big fan of swords, but not of daggers or small concealable blades. They just seem to me to be for assassins, or those that have no honour... Dueling all the way!!!

I'm a big guy, so large weapons suit me. I'm not fast enough to parry and thrust with a rapier, so I need to utilize my size and strength. The zanbattou is a good weapon for that, but I think I'd do better with a battle axe.

I enjoy seeing the gi-a-gantic weapons in both anime and real life. I do prefer to use smaller weapons though... I'm a little on the small side to be using rreally large swords, though If I ever got a hold of that Masasmune from swordsonline.com I would probably try to figure out how to use that.

I rock with Nightmare.

As for guns...I like sniper rifles and pistols  All my friends when we are playing shoote rgames want explosions and machine guns...sure I'm ok with that but I prefer to be in a bell tower or on a roof sniping people out or defending myself with a hand gun...so my "large weapons" thing does apply to guns as much as it does to swords.

Big weapons are just an impediment unless you've got super big muscles. Not to mention they're hard to hide and slow you down. But tiny weapons like dirks are only good for assassin jobs... The biggest I'd want would be a claymore, and the smallest would be a short sword for emergencies.

But the biggies look awesome in anime, don't they?

Hmm...it depends on the realm in which we are speaking.

If the real world, I would prefer a kodachi for melee, and a P90 submchine gun for ranged combat.

In anime, heck yeah. Hook me up with a Buster Sword. After all, in anime, one can wield one of those one-handed ala Could Strife, regardless of your pathetic laws of physics.

As for swords...I prefer a medium sized weapon, not to big, but not small either. about the size of a katana.

I remember reading of an 81cm (do note the prefix) railroad cannon used by the Germans in WWI against the French. It was aptly nicknamed "The Paris Gun." It was, of course, not exactly easy to aim, and was not enough to turn the losing tide for the Jerries. However, the psychological effect was stunning, so much so when they were lucky enough to hit something, the French thought it was a bomb dropped from an impossibly high-elevation plane. Planes weren't very powerful back then as you would expect, so the Frogs said, "What the [REDACTED] just hit us?"

Suprisingly, the Paris gun wasn't the biggest cannon ever built. In Gulf I, the US/UN/whoever found an (unfinished) cannon built by the Iraqis, so big that it had to be built on the side of a mountain and with a bore so wide that a VW Beetle could drive through it. Some believed that it was meant to target Israel.

I just like weapons period. Especially normally harmless looking ones...I remember an episode of Hercules or Xena and there was this one guy who used his pen like a poison dart. Now thas cool. Being a writer myself.
Bad poetry can be a good weapon too.
Or just plain weird weapons. like the FRYING PAN OF DOOM!!!! slam someone in the head with it and he turns into a giant poached egg (this weapon actually does exist...read Patricia C. Wrede)
Seriously though, I like smaller weapons, cause you can carry lots of them.
But medium weapons are usually more balanced....
And freakin big weapons like Wolfwood's cross/armoury/bazooka are insanely cool
I dunno

In a little voice... I have a sword and a couple of knives too!

I like guns for hunting! Nothing like venison in the wintertime...or anytime, but don't tell anyone I said that.JK
I would love to get a real katana, but whoa those things cost a lot!
It would also be cool to learn how to use one of those hunting bows.

Does anyone else find it strange and/or amusing that a group of Christians are casually discussing their favorite weapons? I just thought I would note that irony.

That aside, I do think that huge swords have become a bit clichéd; I can't see one without thinking of Cloud Strife. Although I'm fairly fond of edged weapons in general, my preference would be for something lighter--a katana, perhaps. I'm slightly surprised that, in the discussion of range, no one has mentioned spears or naginatas. They have a longer reach than conventional swords, but aren't as unwieldy as something like a Buster sword.

I would never fight with "real swords" or "real guns" cause that's dangerous! Unless I would be ultra skilled with handling a blade, I'd be afraid I'd hurt someone...or myself.

So that's why I craft swords out of wood. I hate foam swords cause they don't hurt when you get hit and...I just don't like em. I also usually make all my weapons (I have a 4 foot long broadsword as well).
