Havent been here in a while...

Postby JediSonic » Wed Dec 15, 2004 9:01 pm

I havent posted here in almost a month! Its just insane how much time school takes outta my life right now!!! At least Christmas break is coming soon but in the meantime there are finals to study for.

Amazingly I'm still in the top 30 members by post-count, so I guess the school-dayz are hard on us all.

By the way I'm thinking of changing my avatar (for the first time EVAR) sometime, because I've all but abandoned the Starsheep project for now because the program's code is such a mess. If you're sad to hear me make this announcement, I feel honored :) However, I'm preparing to begin a new 3D space/air-combat game, that is if I ever have enough time to really get it off the ground. THe way my life's been going, we could be halfway through summer break before I have anything playable to show for it

... So how's ya'll's lives been going?

Well, I might decide to go and put starsheep up as-is (even though its buggy and without a story mode) so that people can play something better than the original demo.

Wow, where is this top thirty members list of which you speak?

Well, welcome back and do well on your finals!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

O-kaeri nasai.

Osaka, click the members list, and then click Posts. That's the "top posters" list.

Thanks, guys ^^ Life's been getting pretty stressful lately... its nice to know you all still remember me! haha

Even though this new game I'm making is primarily still in the dream-n-sketch stage, I'll try to fill you in on some details and why I think it'll turn out more sucessfully than starsheep:
1) I've spent a whole semester of school in a class called "how to design programs" which has helped me learn the value of thinking code out before you write it, and keeping stuff neat and organized so that you have nothing resembling the almost 2000 lines of pure CHAOS floating around that was starsheep.
2) This game have 360-degree environments unlike starsheep, and will perhaps feel a tiny bit more like a simulator than pure arcade-style.. but dont worry I'll keep it fast-paced enough :) I loved the "X-Wing" space sim games when I was little... it will probably be like a non-starwars-related hybrid of that gameplay style and Rogue Squadron. I say a mix with Rogue Squadron since it will have more variety of gameplay, be faster-paced, and quite possibly 3rd-person at times.
3) In addition to flying around there will probably be a few ground-based missions as you will be piloting an E.C.S.T.R.A. (Experimental Combat STarfighter with Remorphable Airfoils) that is capable of transforming for different tasks. The pun is that your ship's ground-based forms are called, collectively, ECSTRA: Terrestrial. You guys should know from starsheep that I cant make a game design without some oddball humor thrown in :P
4) The graphics will show some improvment over starsheep; the plan is actually use some textures besides grass and menu buttons :P
5) I've learned a little more about writing music in the last year (a more hidden failure of starsheep was my inability to write music that I liked for it; I kept trying to implement starfox melodies with an original feel and.. it didnt work)
6) Even though I currently dont have the foggiest notion of how to do this, I would LOVE to have joystick support in this game because the controls might be pretty icky without one.

Nice to have you here again, JediSonic, though I can't really welcome you back much, because I've been absent just as long as you have been. Hope that your semester went well, and that the next is even better.

Thanks, Volt :)

The main 3 reasons I havent made any project of mine open-source yet is:
1) I'm paranoid about someone stealing it
2) Most of my code is so bad that if I revealed it to the average guru I'd probably get lots of insults and
3) Although I agree that a lot of open source team efforts turn out good, and probably reduces the hassle of not letting the source "leak out" but as I dont have a group of people I'm working with, what can opensource actually do for me?

Glad to see you back, JediSonic. I knew that something had been missing. Actually, I'd suggest you keep the Starsheep avatar. Regardless of whether you ever type a character on the program, it is certainly unique.
