this site has a lot of information about the origins of St. Nicholas/Santa Claus, and I just thought you all might find it interesting. it's sad how cheap this tradition has become.

IIRC, St. Nicholas has a commemoration in my church on 12/6.

My mom is German, so during Christmas we still celebrate some of the German traditions (especially good cookies 
). One of them is that on Dec. 6 Nickolaus comes with candy for the good children and switches for the bad ones. Then on Christmas Eve, the "Christkind" (Christ child) gives presents to all the children.
