I'm fairly sure it's ice first (within first 24 hours), heat later (any time after that), but someone get Doc Sohma---I mean Shoo--in here to confirm it.

Well I hope you have seen a doctor about it. You could try ice wrap to prevent swelling and to decrease pain and try not to use it for a few days. Give it support but don't wrap too tight with bandages. See a Doctor.

Since shooby hasn't responded yet, I'll give my suspect advise. Hopefully he'll come in here an set us all straight soon.
I think it's ice to stop swelling and heat to relieve stiffness. Ice it right after the injury to prevent and control swelling. Once swelling is under control, switch to heat to promote healing and fight soreness.

Yeah, I am going to see a doctor. Don't worry, y'all. (worst case scenario, I mean my mom who has done the same thing)

How did it happen? I would also suggest going to the doctor like ashfire suggested. Although i think what Ashely said is also correct to keep the swelling and pain down. That what i did when i sprained my ankle. And it works.

Ice for 15 minutes at a time, but don't place the ice directly unto the skin. Wrap it up in a towel or something along those lines. Personally, things such as frozen peas or corn kernels I think work better because their smaller then ice cubes, and hence are better at molding to the shape of your arm.
After icing it for the 15, you might want to try stretching your arm unless it's painful. A hot pillow (a bag filed with raw corn or raw rice that's been microwaved for 3 minutes is what I use) will help soothe the pain after you ice it for a few times.
Can ya' tell that I wanted to be a doc once upon a time, yet?

Hey, I seem to remember another someone(namely Heart of Sword) who has injured herself many times more than me.
Buit I know what ya mean, of course. She is referring to a certain injury I got this summer, which I am very embarrassed about so don't ask.

being in martial arts for 7 years i know a thing or two about pulled muscles. first let it heal and use ice if its swollen heat if its not. bengay works wonders though it sure does hurt. no pain no gain though. secondly (sorry im late on this) you may want to stretch out before doing the activities that pull your muscles. its just prevention

Yeah... that is what I did not do. It's the only reason I strained my arm muscle. NEXT time I shall stretch, after this arm feels better and all.
By the way, I ain't hurtin' myself by just typing. In fact, this is a great postion.

The worst? That sounds pretty bad. Okay, see if you can get this element: a tall 18 yr. old high schooler.
