On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had acheived so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But, conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not everyone is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe is said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and any people you meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Both from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Here's Refdesk's quote of the day:

"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.." - Elie

(While I don't entirely agree, there's few things that get under my nerves faster than apathy. If you ever wish to make me visualize kicking you in the head, just say the words "I don't care.")

I'm curious to see if someone is going to list my favorite quote. It's quite famous.

"It flew exactly the way rocks don't," another Douglas Adams (that man was hilarious!!! The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy has never failed to make me laugh)

"Stairs only go down!" my RA

"A little more than kin and less than kind," Hamlet (and various other hamlet quotes also rock)

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it's own." Mattew 6:34

Those are some funny/good ones off the top of my head lol....these types of threads are fun!

one of my favorite quotable people is Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian Dutch woman who survived a Nazi death camp, which she was sent to for helping with an escape underground for Jews. she escaped the camp and eventual death through a paperwork error. here are some of her quotes:

'You may never know that JESUS is all you need, until JESUS is all you have.'

'Trying to do the Lord's work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.'

'Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?'

'When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles. When he stops studying the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil shouts for joy.'

'The life of a Christian is an education for higher service.'

'Perhaps only when human effort had done its best and failed, would God's power alone be free to work.'

'When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.'

Hebrews 12:14 - "Persue peace daily, and holiness without which no one will see the Lord."

"When they put unknown at the end of a quote, that means they probably don't no how to spell anonymous" -unknown

Anybody who sees and paints a sky green and pastures blue ought to be
sterilized." - Adolf Hitler

Very good quote from Miss Ten Boom, soul alive. She was an amazing woman who has inspired me countless times. I'm still waiting to see my favorite quote, though ... (won't I feel stupid if it's already in here and I've missed it!)

And...drumroll please...my absolute fav:

If you’re alive you can repent for what you’ve done. There will be a day when you see your family again. If you die, it’s all gone.â€
