Today is the kickoff of Oktoberfest. Mt. Angel has one of the biggest Oktoberfests outside of Germany. We'll be getting lots of visitors over the weekend, and things can get pretty crazy. This town has less than 4000 people, and only 3 police cars, but over the weekend we will get ~300,000 visitors. Most of it is good clean fun, eating bratwurst and trying the local brews for those of age, but there is one place where all the college kids go (not us seminarians though) that gets really bad (pray for them). It's fun to watch the townspeople in their leiterhosen (sp?) and the German bands that come in for it. Even the Abbey (It was founded by German and Swedish monks) gets into the spirit of things and sells some of their wares in the town.
