Robot Independence.

Talk about anything in here.

Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact.

Now, there's a spooky thought.

Read Asimov.

Even more disturbing than robots with souls is the prospect of having to baptize something with an unshielded power supply.

This is something no machine no matter how cleverly it is designed to appear human can share as it comes directly from God.

See, you say that, but this isn't necessarily true. If you went back a thousand years ago and told people that in the future, humans would fly, they would scoff and reply, "No human can fly, that requires wings." Even if you tried to explain an airplane to them, it still wouldn't work. So you can't really say that it's impossible to create a self-aware robot, because many things that people have deemed impossible have been made possible through technology.

oh yea, I completely agree with Nate here. besides, the debate is about Artificial INTELLIGENCE. not whether or not a Robot can be "spiritual". and about what you said about being "spiritually aware", I don't see any monkeys running off to church on Sundays. yet they are clearly capable of independant thought (not on our level, but...) so a machine COULD be capable of THINKING. and speaking of Intelligence, being spiritually aware does not make one intelligent. In fact, I'm glad we are researching Artificial Intelligence because I often have a struggle finding Intelligent life here on earth. LOL

as soon as you think some thing is impossible it becomes possible. this is an old saying passed down by the toasters through hundreds of thousands of years

Reality bytes: Robots could demand independence

LONDON, England (AP) -- Civil rights for robots? It could be coming.

A study released by the British government says someday robots might become so advanced, they could demand their independence.

The United Kingdom Office of Science and Innovation foresees the day when robots will be able to reproduce and think for themselves.

But don't look for a robot revolution anytime soon.

The study says independence for robots probably won't be much of an issue until the mid-21st century.

Science Fiction isn't always far off. Just look at Jules Verne. Machines may not have "souls" but they could replicate a independent thought similar to our own and even surpass us. Imagine it, a robot would not "forget" things, nor would it convolute it reasoning with religious beliefs or emotional sentiment. They would adapt to just about any situation with ease. They also would not be limited by our feeble, human bodies. Machines, if given independent thought and creativity, could very well have more potential than us. But most sci-fi depicts A.I. as being inheritably evil. This may not be the case at all. It would not be logical for a sentient being with no emotions to seek out destruction or sin. If they acted against us, it would most likely be out of self defense. On the other hand, they could look at us as obsolete and eliminate us to save resources. But I think that Machines would act in a manner that seeks out and strives for the Good rather than evil. Machines would thirst for knowledge and truth about the universe. Since evil itself is ultimately based in an ignorance of truth, Machines would likely oppose evil and would naturally seek Good.
