Neat, I expect it's the same thing though since an electric current can be induced by a changing magnetic field. If your TV speakers are sensitive enough, an induced current could also be audible, or alternatively the induced currents are first amplified and then heard from the speakers. I suppose it's also possible that the phone's initial transmission is at a much higher power level or bandwidth to begin with and then settles down when it has a sense of its environment. This could also induce electric currents, but at a very low level (although I don't think that would be significant enough). It would be broadcasting in the microwave range so it's entirely feasible for the right power level. I have some friends who'd know better than I about that though- my work has not been on telecommunications while theirs has been. I'm afraid EMI/EMC and the associated regulations aren't my forte either.

She got Nextel? All Nextel phones do that because of the frequency.

I have Nextel and it's great because right before my phone rings, any speaker nearby (about 90% of the time) will make quick popping sounds. So I reach for my phone about a second or 2 before my phone even makes a sound.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Nextel uses a slightly higher frequency than other phones?

it's possible. Why these frequencies have affects on other wireless audio equipment, I am not entirely sure. Certainly the equipment is picking up the frequency, although not correctly. Possibly the carrier signal is actually the same frequency as other devices, but the sound frenquency is encoded in a way that only the phone can understand...?

It really is something I've wondered about. I work in a sound board, and when we're running wireless equipment, I can tell when someone's cellphone is turned on when they're on stage or back near the booth... but not when someone in the crowd has one. observation of this would tell me that the interferance of the waves caused by the two devices are just right so that the reciever picks it up enough to make some strange noises. But what a fun physics experement that I have yet to do! *ponders doing it with physics class*

When my cell phone was about to ring, it made my TV kinda buzz, almost pop. So if I was playing a video game, I'd have maybe half a second to pause the game and grab the phone. I figured that the TV was cheap enough that any potentially "harmful interference" =p wouldn't really be worth moving my phone from its usual resting place.

It did that when the TV was turned off, too.

I don't have it near a TV now, though.

that is due to a voltage drop across your house that happens for a moment and takes a moment to recover from. doesn't get much more complex than that, unless you wanna look at the numbers...
