Something disturbing in Yu-Gi-Oh (please don't flame)

Talk about anything in here.

I play Magic: the Gathering. It throws the term "sacrifice" around a lot. But in this case, it just means that you have to destory one of your own cards. Maybe it's just that Magic players see cards differently than non-players. We see tehm for more function than flavor. In Yu-Gi-Oh and MAgic, "sacrifice" and "tribute" are more of simply saying that you need to destory one of your own cards than anything else.

Well, it's based around REAL magic, REAL rituals...it's not like fantasy magic that's in a lot of Anime. I worry that someday, some kid is going to try to copy the magic in YGO and get into the occult. Jarett (the kid who plays the cards) sees me as his out-of-family big sister, so I feel very responsible for him. I think I'm going to have a talk with him about the cards and why some of them are dangerous. He's very mature, actually, and I think he'd understand.

How do you think I should go to him about this? I'm NOT going to go and say, "Yu-Gi-Oh is of SATAN and you should NEVER PLAY IT because you'll get POSSESSED." I want to try to explain to Jarett the true meanings of the cards, then let him make his own decision about it.

in both MTG and YuGiOh sacrifice and tribute are used BOTH for flavor and function. It varies between them.

e.g. an MTG card is called Krark-Clan Furnace. It has a picture of a couple of Goblins throwing metal into a furnace. The card itself says
Sacrifice an Artifact: Add 2 to your mana pool.

Flavor of it was that goblins throw junk metal into a furnace to use to make more junk metal

@Heart fo Sword: True. Yu-Gi-Oh has more real world occult practice related stuff than MAgic. In Magic, magic is more of a force, like light, or gravity, but in Yu-Gi-Oh, it is quite a bit closer to the occult.
@skynes: True. Smetimes it does get pretty creepy, such as destorying your own creatures to get good stuff, but cards' functions are determined before the "flavor" of the card is made. Besdies, players don't typically care about flavor. We don't say "I'll have my Krark goblin of teh mountain throw my Iron Myr into the great furnace to produce two red mana." They say "I'll sac my iron myr for 2."

OK. While I will grant you that SOME of the magic in MTG is based on real magic, there are also some things in there that are just plain made up. This is true in anime too. (I'm thinking specifically in the UY episode [ 19, maybe? ] where Ran gives Ataru the cupcake - the whole chanting scene was a little weird.)

Quite a bit of "old time occult magic" has been shown to be little more than charlatanizm or science. I will not go so far as to say it's ALL hoaxish, but I just don't see too many kids these days taking 'Magic' that seriously. If the lad is as mature as you say he is, I'd think it unlikely that he'd see it as factual.

If I remember correctly, this topic was explored quite thoroughly in a previous thread (about D&D, if I remember right). Perhaps someone would like to go rooting around in the archives and see if they can find it?

Well, yeah he's mature, I mean he tried to make a stick transform into Tetsusaiga by dipping it into the swimming pool, then cracking up and running around, attacking invisible Spider-heads (a few were bushes). To him, I think it's all just a game, but I'm going to ask him anyway if he thinks that YGO is real. If he says "no, it's just a game," then praise God. If he says he's not sure, I'm going to have to explain some things to him...

Hmmm. I might just want to stay out of making any more comments after this. Since you obviously know what I think about YuGiOh. I understand it's all just fun and make believe. Even though my favorite character is Bakura I wouldn't be invovled with him if he were real because what he does is evil and I wouldn't want to be involved in his occult magic. But when it's in fantasy, that's all it is....fantasy. My deck is based after his which means I have many of the cards he has....including Destiny Board(which I'm fully aware is an Ouija Board, but it's just cards that you hafta collect to win the game, just like Exodia). And I have strong Christian friends who are in their 20's who play the game with me.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm going on and on.

And Heart of Sword, I do believe what you are doing is right with confronting him and asking what he thinks.

I believe that shows can be enjoyable as long as you don't take them seriosly. I'm so glad when I watched Gundam Wing I didn't scream and hide thinking the Earth was going to be destroyed by OZ. Ok....I think I'll leave now.

Yeah, game speech is funny. here's a few more:

"sac, blowup, eat it, exile it, go fish!*fo real*, burn"

Bakura_fan,

your deck sounds interesting. can ya pm me a list of the cards that u use?

i use to play the game alot. my deck back then was a dark magician deck. its only purpose was to bring the dark magician to the field and keep it there.

currently my deck is a shinato deck. although i rarely play anymore.

i use to play YGU alot when my lil bro needed some one to play with. yet, i'm glad he doesnt play it anymore. he got bored with it n moved on liking import cars. *groovyness*

however, i still play the game every once in a while. not many college age ppl playing Yugioh in my area. the anime club in the university does have about 6-8 ppl who play the game frequently. sometimes i play there.

I did have some of the cards but it was too expensive and I'd rather buy MTG cards instead.

I do have YuGiOh WorldWide Edition on the GBA. My favourite deck is my Exodia deck. I have a habit of winning by turn 3, sometimes turn 2. Once I won on turn 1. Turn 5 by the ABSOLUTE latest.
