Hmm... 猫の女の子。
I think cat girls are popular because it's considered attractive in Japan for a girl to be childish, happy, and ditzy. There are anthropomorphic males too, but did you notice how most of them are more animal than the female counterparts? At least, the ones made by men. Inu Yasha seems more the traditional Japanese Anthropomorphic character, having only ears and a couple other features of a dog, but he was made by an 女の人...
It's not as common, but some manga have characters that are more animal than the traditional "catgirl." These are often called Furres by english speaking fans. They have entire bodies covered in fur, can be all sorts of animals, and will have more than just ears that are animal-like. I can somehow handle the cat ears, but the furry thing is too far for me...
