Silly ideas we had as kids

Postby Momo-P » Sun Dec 11, 2005 7:59 pm

Ever look back on life and think "boy I was an idiot when I was little"? xD Well...here we can talk about our strange ideas we had as children. From the cute ones, to outright insane.

For me, I have two.

Back when I was little, my father worked at a factory that used large machinery, and many of the things inside reached up incredibly high. Almost like cherry pickers or fire ladders. Well...you know how the moon goes through phases, and some nights it's down to almost nothing? For me, the moon was broken. I use to think that when the moon got down to the small phases like God's thumbnail and stuff, it had broken apart and needed to be fixed. So who fixed it? My daddy. I use to think he used those large machines at work to go up and fix the moon. I even use to tell people that when they asked me what he did. XD

My second experience I can remember dealt with my cousin Heather. She was born with the disease known as MD and one day I asked my mom how come. Well obviously my mom told me it had to do with genes, but was I smart enough to understand? Nope. So for the longest time after that I use to think it had to do with the JEANS my aunt Patty wore when pregnant with Heather. XD

So there are mine. Anybody else have some funny stories to tell?

When I was younger I was obsessed with the idea that a wolf would show up on my lawn. Of course, it would be a *tame* one, so I'd be able to take it in as a pet.

I remember when I was 4, my dog ran away. So my mom told me that he ran away to Disney World, which made perfect sense to me because who didn't want to see Mickey Mouse? I was very happy for my dog; I kept imagining him on the Flying Dumbo ride, just going around and around.

Once when I was young, I saw a map that showed an arrow up and labelled it north (for the compass direction). I then thought "well how do you know where west, east and south are?". I didn't quite grasp the idea of relative directions.

I had all kinds of wierd Ideas as a kid, my dad worked at a powerplant and I would always see the steam rising from the smokestacks when we drove down to bring him lunch. There would always be cumulus looking condensation forming above the smokestacks so I thought that my dad made clouds.

He also gave me his Vietnam medal thingy, I was really into the military, (it has long rectangular pieces of cloth arrayed in a giant square, you see massive squares of these things on the one side of generals chests in pictures with all of their medals), but when he gave it to me I thought that each of the rectangular was for a different war! I thought that he had fought in the civil war, world war 1, world war 2, world war 3, the vietnam war... and others that were obviously less important in history.

I also believed that if you used enough magnetic fields or gravitation, you could create a perpetual motion machine. The idea of conservation of energy never sunk in, and in fact I believed that you gain an infinite amount of energy out of a perpetual motion machine once you built it!

When I was really young my grandmother tried to give me some shiny pennies, we were both alone in the house together. The problem was she told me they were shiny because they were magic. The problem was, my parents had just taken me to see a kids movie with witches in it and told me that there were real things called witches and that they were evil, and used MAGIC and if I were to ever find out they were a witch I was to run away from them as fast as possible because they were after all evil and did bad things to girls and boys. Needless to say I ran away and locked myself in the bedroom where my grandmother couldn't get to me (tears rolling down my face in fear (WHO KNEW! MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A WITCH! (NOT REALLY)) but anyways, I was eventually coaxed out by my mother after she came home and I was imformed that my grandma wasn't really a witch.

Hmm... I wonder if there are any more? can't think of them though.

Later,
Pascal

I thought that too! I had thought up a design of a downhill slope that water runs down, turning a generator, which powers a pump for the water to get up the slope again; but also the generator had enough power for whatever device you needed electrical power for.

When I was three I tried to paint my beuro green with a crayon. It didint turn out so well, and I got in trouble. I really did intend for the whole thing to be solid green when I was done.

When I ws little, I was scared to go to bed at night cause I thought a wolf would jump through my window and eat me. Not sure where I got that idea.

ALso, my dad convinvced me(and my cousins) of so many things. At one point I believed there was a troll or something like that living in our air vents. forgot his name though. At another time, my dad convinced me that those little corn things i stir-fry were from bonsai corn plants. Made snese to me.

He also convinced my cousin that pretzels grew on trees.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a security guard and thought that if thugs would come in I'll pretend to be asleep then shoot at them when they're not looking, but now I don't want to be one, thinking it isn't easy. lol

When I was little I had the typical constant childhood worry about my parents getting old and dying.

Well, everytime I voiced this concern, my Mom would tell me that she used Oil of Olay lotion and that would keep her from getting old.

She was joking and didn't realize until years later that I took her VERY seriously. For a long time I thought it really did keep you from getting old and that soothed my fears. I would even tell people so, in a very authoritative manner. At least it soothed my fears until I was old enough to deal with them, ne?

 Same here!

When I was about six or seven years old, I was convinced that fighter jets took off like space shuttles and landed on the runway. My friend then told me that fighter jets both take off and land on the runway.

And then I used to mispronounce words, but say them very casually. Here are two of them:

Opponent(sp?)- Oppoment

Insolent- Isolent

I still mispronounce giggawatt as jiggawatt. (From Back to the Future "Jumpin Jiggawatts!") it causes quite the laughs among my fellow physics majors, especially when we are discussing electricity or anything else where E9 comes up. Frankly I prefer jigga instead of gigga, it adds more flavour to my speech and make me sound like a real mad scientist.

I got one. You see I got a little mole on my left middle toe. And when I was little I thought it was a marking from a brown marker. So I would constantly wash it with soap and water thinking It would come off...

 It's pretty funny the things we believe so seriously as children.

No, of COURSE that never happened to me... *whistles innocently*

When I asked how my Dad and Mum met each other and got married my Father always used to tell me that there was a big race where he got chased by a lot of girls and the one who ran the fastest got to marry him. I seriously believed this for some time.

Ahaha XD Some of those are really good.

Let's see here... <.< >.> My mom had this huge old vacume that was so noisy and I honestly believed with all my heart that it was a monster, and whenever she would vacume the house I would retreat to my 'safe spot' which was a big carboad box in the corner, and I would watch the monster prowl the house through my little peep hole.

After watching Mary Poppins with my dad I jumped off a little ledge with an umbrella. I'll let you use your imagination on how that turned out.

I was always scared to death of the idea of going to heaven because I thought that all we would do is sit around and sip tea and talk about grown up stuff forever. *yawn* boring!

Well, for me it was somewhat typical things...

At school I would dig in the sandbox to try and make it big enough to get to China :/ ...then I realized that from where I live in Canada, I'd probably only make it to Russia >_<

Also, everytime I heard the phrase "make-believe" on kiddie shows like Barney, I used to think it was "maple leaf" for the longest time :/ So that confused me for a while^^

And then you know there was the whole Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, Bloody Mary deal. Well, not so much Bloody Mary :/

Oh, and my cousins would ALWAYS bug me and convinced me when I was 5 that they befriended a genie that only they could see :/ Well, it was fun in those days when the genie "made us invisible with it's potions" and we couldn't "see" each other. Heh fun times, yet grr with the bugging of younger relatives >_<

Also... before I was really Christian (went to church and stuff sometimes when little but wasn't too into it) I thought at one point that heaven was like you go up into the clouds and watch a movie like a theatre of your life :/ Lots of seats and everyone could only see their movie for "judgement" or something :/ Then at one point when I was slightly older and not exactly "doign the church thing" I almost thought death was like sitting in a coffin and just thinking to yourself the whole time :/ I simply just could not comprehend your mind just dying and "sleeping" for eternity >_< And well, looks like I was onto something there!

That's all I can think of for now. I'm sure there's TONS though!

When I was little I misunderstood the words to Jingle Bells and Silent Night.
I thought the lyrics to Jingle Bells were, "a one horse slopin' sleigh". I had no idea what that meant, but I just went with it. I also never figured out the the Bobtail mentioned in the song was the name of the horse.
For Silent Night, which I had to sing as a solo in church back when I was little and no one cared that I couldn't sing, I though the lyrics were "browned young virgin". I realized that was stupid but I took it to mean maybe she was tan.
Another thing was stoplights. I asked someone, probably my Dad, how the stoplights knew when to change colors. I was told there was a man controling the lights. I took that to mean there was a man inside the traffic lights in front of a monitor manually flipping the light switch. I wondered if it was a tiny man inside the stoplight, but I knew that wasn't it. So, I asked the person talking to me if it was true that things that were farther away appeared smaller. Whomever it was I was talking to confirmed that, so I decided that the traffic lights were further away than what I thought they were, and it was an optical illusion, and inside each stoplight was a man at a computer making the lights change colors.
I also did not realized my Dad was short, I just thought all other men were freakishly tall!

Another thing came to mind: the deal of "where babies came from". :/ I thought the stork just carried it into a room of a couple from... well, never really thought about that. I've seen some cartoons that depict it as a "baby factory". :/ I've also heard other variations like "the cabbage patch" and so forth :/ *sigh* I have no idea where those ideas came up with but you THINK there would be a bit of a different story. Well, whatever helps an innocent child into believing I guess^^

I was the exact opposite. I hated getting dirty. My mother had to TEACH me to like playing in a sandbox.

This happened to my younger cousin, my dad teases my cousins a lot. Mom was making garlic bread to go with spaghetti one night, and she puts grated chives on the bread. Well my cousin had never seen this before so she asked what the green stuff was. My dad leaned over with a perfectly straight face and told her they were grass clippings. She didnt eat garlic bread for nearly three years after that. Nowaday's she's figured out that my dad likes to joke around and her favorite response is "Unca David, Your a teasa!"
