Seeking ideas for Middle Eastern event

Postby Jaltus-bot » Thu Jul 06, 2006 4:49 pm

I want to set up a middle-eastern cultural awareness event at my college. I’m looking for some ideas for it. Can you help? Thanks.

Also, if you know of a way to find a source for live middle-eastern music, that would be great. Thanks.

I want to make people aware that Middle Eastern does not just mean Muslim or Arab although I do want to acknowledge that they are major groups in that region.

I know there are groups who travel around with a Jewish tabernacle, Moses leading Israel in the wilderness style. Not sure if you wanna go that all out, but it's an idea. ^^

Yeah, I go to a public, community college with a strong MSA. I'm not sure that is the type of thing that will appeal to many of the students.

You could devote a section of it about their food, such as kebabs, pides, etc. Food is the universal language (apart from music)!

If there are are non-Arab ethnic clubs (Turkish, Iranian, etc) on campus or in the community, you might want to speak to them. You could also talk to the various religious groups (Coptic, Maronite, Muslim) to see if they are willing to become involved.

Given what the various groups here do, this could involve:
national dress
food (food will always get people to stop)
music
stage acts (if possible)

Also, if you know of a way to find a source for live middle-eastern music, that would be great. Thanks.

I don't know about live music, but this CD is really good:
Ghazal: As Night Falls on the Silk Road
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

That is a really cool idea. As others have said: FOOD! The two that I recommend most are baklava and hummus.

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€
