Like many others who posted here, I went for the fashion. The elaborate details and surprising variety of the Japanese Goth Scene (from Elegant Goth to Gothic Lolita to who-knows-what), I found incredible designs and artistis creativity in black, white, blue, red, pink, maroon, navy, orange, and more. It goes so far beyond the stereotypes and really did leave a lot open to individuality. I am partial to black, though, greatly because it looks elegant. This shows up in non-Goth areas of fashion too; I mean, tuxedos and sleek evening dresses are not particularly Goth (though the Japanese can incorporate anything, I've found...)
I still love Goth fashion, but don't wear it regularly because it's time consuming, expensive, and sometimes creates adverse first impressions (not that I care what people think of me, but sometimes it's hard to cultivate relationships when they won't stand within fifteen feet of me or think I'm going to be a bad influence on the young ones.)
