I tend to use big words, because my voluminous vocabulary helps me to communicate naturally with the people around whom I spend my time. For a fairly academic audience, it manages to convey my intent quite efficiently. On the street, however, I speak a bit differently.
It's not that I "just naturally" use this kind of vocabulary, but that I spend enough time around it that it seems natural. When I spend time around other groups, my vocabulary changes. It's kind of like the way, when you spend a lot of time with people who speak a little differently (say, with an accent), you tend to pick up some of the characteristics of their speech. Basically, it's part of the reinforcement of your understanding of the method of communication.
