Living in NZ, I've seen quite a few wetas. They eat rotting wood (I think), and look like mutant crickets.
Anyway, today CreatureArt (my twin sis), showed me one she'd found. He was in the bottom of a bucket, and she turned it upside down, trying to get it to fall onto her hand so she could pick it up. It stubbornly stuck to the bottom of the bucket, even though she was shaking it, so to give her a hand I whacked the end of the bucket where it was clinging on inside. Instead of falling onto her hand, however, it must've rolled over her palm because it ended up squatting our wooden deck (/veranda). I was trying to get it to stand on top of a large chicken feather I had so I could move it off the deck, but instead of staying on the feather it climbed right over it, and ended up on my hand.
I was fine with that, since I have a little bit of a soft spot for some insects (cicadas, katydids, grasshoppers, crickets, dragonflies, slaters (go pillbugs!) etc), until I saw the jaws. Okay, they weren't massive pincers, but they were big enough to give me a very decent nip. Immediately alarmed, I started shaking my hand to get it off. It held on with its legs for dear life, but didn't even try to bite me (Nice thing.
). When he finally fell onto the deck, he lifted up his back legs until they were vertical to make himself look bigger. It looks really amusing when they do that.
After that CA put it back on an old woodpile.
This weta's body was about... 3 inches or 8cm, somewhere around there. There are much larger ones in other parts of the country.
"Lol, cute little wetas..." *weta crawls onto shoulder* "EEK! EEK! Get it off!"
Anyone else here like,semi-like, or hate bugs?
