How are we supposed to keep Sunday sabbath?

My girlfriend was having trouble understanding how we're supposed to do this, so I offfered to post this for her, is it true we're not supposed to spend any money and not entertain ourselves(ie no games/anime?) how else can we keep it sabbath?

I think that we are not to do any menial labor, but obviously as Christ said, we can work on the sabbath if it is something beneficial. I see nothing wrong with entertainment, since it is supposed to be a day of rest, as long as you remember to keep it a holy day for the Lord. I would also suggest that if you do not wish to work on the sabbath, then you should not expect others to as well by going out to eat or to the movies.

Hmm... We may be getting into gray interpretation areas here, but I'll offer the following. Let's keep it friendly, please...

There were a lot of obscure religious pasages in the orignal Hebrew scriptures, that were kinda swept to the side when Jesus came. There are plenty of examples for this ("Don't wear clothes made from two different fabrics" comes to mind) but that's a different issue. Basically, it boils down to the sabbath rules being there for OUR bennifet. After all, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath." I think that "the spending money and entertainment things" are throwbacks to the orignal bajillions of laws that the pharasees had made up.

I interpret this to mean that you should do something that is restfull. For me, that's video games. As for not expecting others to work on the sabbath, that's not something I really think about. You can take a sabbath on any day (I use Sunday, but that's arbitraty. I mean, what if you're a pastor?!?), so I don't really feel "bad" for the people who work on Sunday...

Just my $0.02, though. It's not an official CAA stand. We don't really take a stand on these types of issues.

Concerning the sabbath, I refer to the following verses:

"One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For no of us lives to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord" (Romans 14:5-8).

Pretty straighforward, in my opinion. I find it more convenient to "take a Sabbath" on Saturday, since I don't have class or work the next day; thus, there is not as much pressure to do work.

However, this chapter also says, "Therefore, let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way" (vs.13). That should be kept in mind, especially since so many people consider Sunday to be a holy day. For example, perhaps you have a Christian friend staying at your home, who considers it sinful to patronize restaurants/stores on Sunday. Taking this person out to eat would probably cause them to stumble.

Of course it is important to keep in mind that sinning is in view here. It does not mean that you must stop doing something merely because it offends someone, as you are probably just offending their sensibilities and/or legalism.

I just want to make it clear that I don't think it's a sin to go out to a restaurant on sunday. I was just pointing out that if you don't believe it is right to work on sunday, then it's unfair to expect other people to work.
