AMV Contest!

Postby Geirr » Sun Feb 01, 2009 4:19 pm

Hello, everyone!

I haven't posted here often, but I happen to be an AMV contest coordinator for a Portland, Oregon convention called Kumoricon. It's a three-day convention held over Labor Day weekend.
(http://www.kumoricon.org)

Anyways, if there are folks on this board who like making AMVs, we'd like to see what you've got! Kumoricon has been growing every year since it started six or seven years ago. This year I think the AMV contest audience could hit or exceed 1300 people. (!)

Anyways, the URL for the convention rules is:
http://www.opusnet.com/guy1656/k2009-amv.htm

Last year we received around 70 entries from like 11 countries including 3 Canadian provinces and 7 states. The judges' panel selected 34 AMVs to run in the contest. The contest ran nearly two hours long.

( Note to Admins: If this is the wrong sub-forum, please feel free to transfer this thread to any appropriate area. - G)

I will post an excerpt of the categories right below.

AMV Contest Categories, Etc. (7-10 Prizes!)

Postby Geirr » Sun Feb 01, 2009 4:58 pm

1. TENSION:
Any story or strong theme holding the audience in high suspense throughout. This could be (but not limited to) situations like: a conflict of wills, a calculated risk during a race against time, or confronting an ominous and shifting threat, or exploring and probing an unknown menace.

2: GENKI!
The sugar-blast category. Light and fun exhuberant works, possibly using dance beat. Themes with a fun-for-all, positive feel or outcome.

3. JAPANESE MUSIC:
An open category using any sort of Japanese music, from traditional to enka to J-pop.

4. RETRO:
This category has FOUR conditions.
The AMV must meet any TWO of them:
(a) MIDI music from 'classic' game console systems.
(b) Audio source is anything created before 1983.
(c) All anime is 20th century.
(d) Video must appear as monochrome or black and white. You may add a sepia tone to the light color for the 'faded old film' look. (Grainy film treatments, longitudinal vertical scratches, or 'strands of hair and other cruft stuck in the projector window' effects are optional.) are

Your choice - pick any two from the above.

5. RANDOM AMUSEMENT:
This is a broader category than Comedy / Parody; it also includes bizarre or off-beat works that con-fuse as well as a-muse.

6. TRAILERS:
Includes fake commercials, TV spots, and movie and game trailers. May use actual advertising audio or a fictitious creation in the style of a commercial, trailer, or fake episode opening credits. Serious and intriguing dual-openers will also show in this category. Comedy trailers may get redirected to RANDOM AMUSEMENT.

7. ACTION & EFFECTS This is where the high-speed music and flashy stuff meet. Take your Bonine® and buckle in!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
All AMVs must be "PG-13" or "cleaner."
Anyone can enter; You do not have to be a convention member to submit, and you do not have to be present at the convention to receive a prize. Winners who are not at the con will be contacted privately so we can ship their prizes. The typical prize is one or a few anime DVDs per prize.
Eight prizes will be determined by audience ballot voting:
Categories #1 - #7 (one prize each) plus
Audience Best of Show (#8)
On top of that, the judges panel may select a Judges Choice award (#9) and the contest coordinator (that's me this year) may select an Honorable Mention. (#10.)
See the contest URL for submission details, video formats, and other information. THE DEADLINE IS Friday, 17-JUL-09.
:-D
