Mp3 players!

Postby Aletheia » Tue Dec 16, 2008 1:28 pm

Well, as of yesterday, my old fifth gen iPod Video has finally kicked the bucket. Apparently the hard drive failed. I could try to replace it, but I would want to replace the battery too if I did that, because I've been wanting to do that for years, plus I never was all that happy with my iPod.

So now I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. I've looked at several - Zune, Creative Zen, I might even consider another iPod - but I'm not quite sure which to choose. I'm looking for something with plenty of hard drive space, not too expensive ($200-300 ~), and that can play video. I'm looking for honest user opinions - because you can find reviews on the internet, but a lot of them feel biased. Tell me what you think. ^_^

Just get a brand-new iPod classic - according to Apple's site, it's $249 for a 120GB model. You're already familiar with the iPod and it does what you want (epic hard drive space, exactly within your price range, and video-capable). You can also get a refurbished (used, but restored to new condition) 160GB iPod classic through Apple for the same $249. I'd be surprised if you use all of 160 GB - I'm a music lover, and I haven't yet filled my 30GB fifth-gen.

I have a wee little Creative Zen and I love it. I don't know the limit of songs it can hold because I tend to take off as many as I put on and sort of cycle them around because I hate the same music all the time, even if it's on shuffle. It's a fantastic little thing, though.

I use a Creative Zen Vision M - 30gb. Always served me well. If you're looking at those though, I'd say go for a Vision W to get the wider screen. I'm not sure if that comes in the 60gb or only 30, or on the prices ((sorry, been a few years since I've looked at these things)), but I've always been happy with Cerative's stuff.

Although, if you're already accustomed to ipods and fine with them, that deal Raiden mentioned pretty good for that much memory. I'm not an Apple fan myself though, so I can't really give a recommendation there, lol.

THIS.

I have the 80 GB ipod-classic, and I STILL thinks it's fabulous. I have over 11,000 songs (I have an unhealthy number of CD'S) and about a dozen movies, and 30 or so music videos, and I still have space. I have NO idea how, but it's the greatest thing on the planet.
I paid $260 for the 80 GB about a year and a half ago, so if you can get away with a 160 for that same price, I'd definetely go for it.

I must admit, Zunes are pretty sweet, but I think Ipods are just a lot more convieniant, because accessories, docking stations, etc, are readily available, and you can pretty easily get music from your friends itunes on to your ipod without hassle.

That's actually a really good point about the accessories. XD I'm planning to buy a new iPod soon too, mostly because my 30GB is nearly full of music. XD I'd definitely suggest an iPod though. I've never had any problems with mine, and it runs perfectly after almost 2 years. I've also dropped it a number of times (once down the stairs...), and it still works like a charm (though I do have a pretty sweet case). XD Anyways, that's what I'd suggest!

zunes are pretty cool, my sister has one... I like how personal it can be (you can set your own wallpapers and stuff on it) but everyone is right when they say that ipods just have more for them...

like in my area, you can't even buy zune music cards anymore...it's like they are becoming obsolete...XD

I have a little 8 gig video nano that my dad found on the ground at an airport XD (the second one he's found actually, he found a shuffle in June XD) and I adore the little thing

I say get another ipod XD

Ya but you have free Kangaroos ;p

...
I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but it'll probably mean something eventually.

Ah, who listens to easy-listening by choice, anyways? ^_~

Hmm, I guess the iPod I had was just a bad one. Then again, it was the first gen with video, so of course it was going to be pretty buggy. I'll probably go for the 120 gb, just because it's new (yes, I'm very picky about this stuff XP), and there is no way I would ever fill it up, unless I decided to put my entire anime collection on there. XD

Think big.

That being said, they are all pretty nice choices. You won't go 'wrong' with any of them. However the question is which one is more right for you. *The real mp3 players that is.*

I also have an 80gb iPod classic... highly recommended. Zune would be a great one as well, but there are a lot more accessories available for the iPod these days.

I have a 4GB nano - you know, the really old ones without video and still cost $200. Ugh. Oh well.

I would suggest getting an iPod - not only for the convenience of ready accessories and etcetera, but also for the format. I'm not sure what other mp3s have as formats, but I definitely like the click wheel format. It's easy to use and anyone can use it. Plus, it looks cool. XD Apple definitely has the monopoly in mp3 players.

LOL what the heck.

Thanks for your input everyone. I'm still not sure which one I'll go with, but I have time to figure it out, since I'm not going to have the money to replace it for a couple of months at least. Ah, Christmas... ^_^

I have a 20 Gig Ipod Photo, now that's old school. I've had that thing for 3 1/2 years and with a few hiccups it's still ticking. Battery life has taken a noticeable dip since then. Storage sucks now considering I have about 30 Gigs of music but oh well its not like I listen to all of it regularly.

I'm pretty much just waiting for it to crap out and then move on to a bigger and better one.

Yeah I would go with another Ipod. You just can't beat them for the price, accessories, ease of use, space.
