RIP Robert Jordan

Last night a giant in the Fatnasy genre died. We all knew he'd die before the series ended, but it's ironic that he died at the last book. Robert, you were a fantastic writer and I truly enjoyed your works. Here's to your memory and the legacy your son and/or wife will be continuing.

You may want to fix the "fatnasy" typo.

So how is the Wheel of Time series going to wrap-up? Are they going to do like V.C. Andrews and get a ghost writer?

After the moment of silence and all that, everyone's minds will turn to Wheel of Time. Do we have his notes for the last book? I wasn't even sure he was that far, but then again it has been a while since I followed the series.

He knew it was coming and tried to get everything in order as I understand it. First I heard it would be either his son or wife, but now I'm starting to hear that one or more members of the "fatnasy" community would like to step up and take a shot at finishing "A Memory of Light."

Also, I'm keeping the typo as it is because it amuses me. Better Fatnasy than Fatnasty.

I will be forever bitter at the fantasy genera in general if there isn't a conclusive ending to the 15,000 page saga.

I only learned about this because I randomly decided to do a search for the name Siuan today and wikipedia had a death date on it. I should read Yahoo news...

Even though half of the fantasy community seemed to hate the Wheel of Time, I always loved the series. I swear it has one of the best online communities in the world, with awesome humor pages and usually clean and thoughtful forums (in my experience). It was what first brought me to actually joining in any regular discussion in an online forum. I actually bought the first 10 books in hard back about a month ago and was making jokes about how long it would take for book 12 to come out. According to what I've read, he had the ending for the series planned years ago, so he has plenty of notes on it and has even written some of the final pages.

I shall miss you Robert Jordan. "May you shelter in the palm of the Creator's hand." (that's about the closest to a Christian statement I can remember from all of the burials in the books)

That's quite sad. How old was he?

it's been one of those weeks i think

i found out yesterday that robert jordan was in fact the boss of my audio techniques instructor at her other job and was born and lived in my hometown up to the end of his life. i was floored when i made the connection between robert jordan and my instructor and just as surprised to hear of his passing. it is my hope that in some way the Lord can use this to draw my instructor closer to a relationship with Christ. my heart goes out to the family. i never read his books, and honestly don't much plan to, but he had my respect through his success as a writer in the medieval and fantasy genre.

According to Wikipedia, he was 58. YMMV.

So did he have cancer or a heart disease? That seems kinda young to die.

Again from Wikipedia, it seems like it was heart related.

For additional inquiries, it may save time if you head over to wikipedia and search for Robert Jordan. There is a veritable plethora of knowledge there.

I'm sure it will end. That series had far too large an impact on the fantasy genre for someone not to step up and help.

Well... but it won't be written by Robert Jordan, though...

I just started reading The Wheel of Time. Seriously, I'm not yet on page 200 of the first book. I definitely wanna read at least a few more if not all of them, though. But I'm also reading George R. R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones" and I'd like to read more than just the first of Piers Anthony's "Xanth" books.

Yeah, I looked up some more stuff about it, and he apparently found that out, and they told him he only had 4 years to live. So, he knew he didn't have long to live, and was in a process of writing his last book. So, I guess it wouldn't be so bad for it to be like... only the second half of the last book written by someone else.

Jordan and Martin are really similar. That's one of the reasons I was drawn to Martin. They both aim towards a more "realistic" style with loads of detail.
