Hey all!! I tried to talk to you last night, but for some reason my internet was being a pain and every time I tried to post there was an error. Right now I'm sitting in my tiny hotel room in Osaka. I'm finding it to be both nifty and tiny. Exactly how I imagined it!! You actually have to leave the room key in the 'light switch' to keep the electricity on! It's weird! First time I walked in I turned on the lights then proceded to take my stuff in...the lights of course turned off because I took the key out. Confusing. I shouldn't be up right now, but I woke up about 15 minutes ago and decided to just take a shower now instead of when my alarm is set because I fell asleep a bit early. They have shampoo dispensers! Anywho, I'll give more updates later. (Oh!! And the FIRST song I heard playing in Japan...was a theme song for Bleach!! XD)

{This was copied from an update I'm sending my friends. If you see any extreme personal info, tell me so I can edit it out.}

Sunday - 1/21:
The plane ride was interesting. Lots of people to talk to. Oddly I mostly talked to 3 older couples. On the way to San Francisco I watched Monk and Psych. From San Francisco to Osaka I watched some of the map, listened to the Spanish music channel, watched a bit of Open Season, ate chicken curry, watched the end of Little Miss Sunshine, watched the end of that one show about the Coast Guard, watched most of the show about the Coast Guard except for the very beginning and what I had already seen, then watched the beginning of the show about the Coast Guard, watched some more of the map, randomly found old music channels, watched more of the map, almost dozed off, watched more of the map, got bored enough to watch the end of DaVinci Code, ate chicken with some sort of Japanese noodles and fruit, and watched the map. I finally landed in Osaka at 4:30 PM and found my way through costoms and out to the hotel shuttle bus by around 6:15. When I finally got to my room, I learned it was insanely tiny (if you haven't done so already, friend KimInJapan on YouTube to see my video). It was interesting though. I had to leave my key card in the light switch to keep the power on in my rooom. The toilets had a bunch of random buttons. Oh, and there was a Teachings of Buddha book right next to the New Testament. I fell asleep around 11.

Monday - 1/22:
I woke up at 4 AM in the hotel and just decided to get on the computer and talk to people online. When I finally decided to get ready (even earlier than I originally planned), I found out that the cap to my new bottle of body wash was off. About 1/3 of the bottle ended up in my bag, but I saved the rest because the bottle was perfectly fine. Maybe 1/2 (though probably less) of what spilled was stuck in the plastic bag it was in, but the rest was mixed in with the rest of my stuff. Luckily nothing was harmed. The only things to get really soaked were boxes such as granola bars and the box around a present I bought. I just cleaned off a few things and threw away some wrapping. Amazingly no books were messed up. It only landed on the waxy surfaces of 4 books, and didn't leave any stain on them whatsoever. It was right next to my picture case - didn't touch it at all. So yeah, now my bag and some of my washable items smell nice. It did cause me to be about 20 minutes late to the airport, but thats fine because the bus for the school wasn't scheduled to leave for another 40 minutes.

I'm now in Seminar House 4!! {edit} I think I'm going to get a new phone instead of using my brother's. {wow that transistion doesn't make much sense with my edit} Talking to students around here, I can get a plan for about 2500 yen a month (cheapest plan) and it comes with a phone. I can't get online much right now because my laptop isn't set up on the school network yet and I have to wait until that goes through before I can hook up to the Internet on it. I'm using our dorm computer lab right now (which is actually really good).

I must say, this area is crowded (street-wise). It really is like one continuous city of tiny little roads with buildings crushed in. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to school from my dorm - 10 minutes to get to school grounds and 10 more to actually get to the part of campus with my building, maybe more. Yesterday I went on a small tour (4 of us, then 3, then 4 again, then just 2...the other 2 kept wandering off because 1 was here last semester) of the school and some of the stores in our area. Then I went with a guy to Kyoto to go to a bookstore. XD That was interesting. It cost 340 yen to get there and 340 yen to get back on the Keihan train line. The manga were really insanely cheap though, only 105 yen each! Thats about $1 for a book. (I will accept requests to buy manga at their cover price if you pay for shipping and handling! :P) I couldn't find anything for myself but I bought some souveniers (sp) for friends. At only $1 a book, I thought it would make great gifts, considering it costs $1 for a tiny bottle of juice out of a vending machine (or I could get the tiny can of preheated hot cocoa...thats a fun one).

Tuesday - 1/23:
Today I took my placement test. I now feel like I know absolutely no Japanese whatsoever. Everyone keeps telling me though that if I got even one question right on certain sections that I'll at least be put in section 2, if not 3. They make is sound like the Japanese courses are hard but the ones for other subjects are easy, so that I'll probably make Bs and Cs for my Japanese ones and As for the culture classes. After the test I went to eat with some friends at the cafeteria. They gave me advice on what to get. Amazingly, I actually enjoyed the food I got, and it was only 270 yen! It had rice at the bottom with a layer of not-quite-cooked eggs and then a pork cutlet on top, all with some weird sauce in it. Then I went shopping with another girl. We can't cook at the moment because nobody has officially moved in yet - we have students who are going into homestay in our rooms right now (3 to a room is crowded), but we can use the water kettles and the stoves/microwaves and such, just have nothing to cook with at the moment. Thus I bought groceries - orange juice, some sort of naturally sweet tea, and a vegetable drink that I've been told tastes like apple juice with a bit of lemon. I also have some random types of instant ramen so that I can eat with only being able to heat water and use chopsticks (yay for the 99 yen store!!). I also got gloves (it's quite chilly out all day long) and some hangers because I've decided I won't use the dryer. It costs 200 yen to wash clothes, then 100 yen to dry, and I've heard the dryers don't usually work in only one try.

The people here are really nice. It feels weird being able to talk to nearly any person in my dorm and have them understand my interests. Not even all of them like anime or dramas, but they don't think it's weird at all and they might have watched an episode or two anyways. It's great! I'm so completely not standing out at all.

The dorm itself is interesting. You have to take your shoes off when you walk in the front door and put them in the shoe room. Everybody walks around in socks, whether its the dining room, computer room or even the shower room. Our actual rooms have a sort of tatami matting in the center of it. They have a really cool design even though they are small. And I must say, heated toilets are better than they sound. Really, you think that its just weird, but it seems to me that it's actually easier to go to the bathroom when you're warm. ^_^;;

Random firsts:
First song heard in Japan: one of the new theme songs for Bleach (heard in the Kansai Airport Washington Hotel convenience store)
First anime seen in Japan: Ouran High School Host Club (episode where Honey can't eat sweets)
First meal in Japan: Easy Mac and a granola bar (traded 3 granola bars for 2 packs of Easy Mac!!)
First American show with Japanese dubbing: MacGyver
First actual Japanese meal: Katsudon Donburi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsudon)

That's it for now! I'll update again soon!

ROFL!!! That's great!! XDDDD I am glad you are having a good time, kimichan!!! I miiiissss you soo much!

It's odd how you take so much for granted when your friends are *only* an hour and a half away... I mean I could have probably driven the two hours to see you any weekend if I asked my parents to take me nicely. But I just got so busy with school and stuffs. Now.. I can't drive those two hours to see you even when I really really want to!

I even dreamed that I DID visit you at your college in KS, last night! and your dorms were like..SUPER fancy. It was...odd...so very odd. >3<

I really miss you though...:/ But I am soooo very happy for you!!!! ^0^

Ouran High School host club is awesome if you haven't already try to watch the entire series there! ^_^

*huggles* can't wait till the next update, Kimichaaan!!

If I was there I would be watching the music channel all the time [yeah! pvs] I would more than happily buy Tales of Symphonia manga' hey can you pm me if you find any cool Asian Kung-fu Generation or Dir En Grey merchandise. Sorry if it sounds like I'm being a nuisance, but I can not find any of this stuff online or in stores. thank you, Enjoy your trip! I will pay for shipping and handling! God bless you!

I ran into that in Brazil. Here I am - stupid American who doesn't speak a word of Portugese stinding in a dark room trying to figure why the lights don't work. Luckil, a maid had to come and zip my two single mattresses into a double. She didn't know what to do with me, so she got a bell hop to help. I'm sure they had a good laugh about me later.

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Too cool.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Here is my first set of pictures. If you ever go to Hiei-zan, start in Shugakuin, that way you can eat Pika-pan!! That's right I ATE Pikachu. He has a cream center! mmm.... The other pic is of a weird little Buddha we saw on the side of the road. His head had fallen off and was replaced by a rock with a face drawn on it. He was also wearing a shower cap. Most of the time people posed for pictures with their heads replacing the missing one.

Some random paths up! One of them was really narrow. It was about the width of a small chair. It was so cool!! The other picture is a small glimpse of Lake Biwa (for any of you who know Japanese geography)

Random picture of my friend under a tree!! We went off the path to look at a grave, yay... The statues and stuff are...statues and stuff. It's right next to a well we couldn't get into because it was locked in a building. I thought the weird mossy bowl filled with dirty water was cool looking though. This was right before a shrine area, but since I only had about five pictures left and I've seen plenty of shrines, I didn't take any pictures. The one of the stairs is our final path down to Sakamoto. It was kinda weird, the path lead to a little road with like tree harvesting or something at it and a rich looking house, and then it turned into a nice staircase leading into the town.
