wow... no wonder media's image of beauty is distorted

Talk about anything in here.

wow... no wonder media's image of beauty is distorted

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Mon Oct 30, 2006 2:50 pm

It's funny, because I just did an essay for english with that as the thesis, and just now my friend sent me a link to the movie that can be found on the main page here: http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com/

It's like, we all know how images are airbrushed and stuff, and this is just an itneresting little thing of how a regular Joe, er-Jill can go from beign a normal person to this attractive image on a billboard that's pretty fake...

Just something interesting to share....

Wow, it's really interesting seeing that transformation in high-speed. That digital stuff with the photoshop program was crazy, I mean, I personally thought the girl's neck was fine before they stretched and skimmed it. I don't have anything against some makeup and hair-styling to give someone a little polish, but changing a persons actual bonestructure is pretty absurd.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Scary thing is that that sort of modification is VERY easy to pull off in photoshop.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. o_o It's interesting to see the real process. Although, the Photoshop-loving side of me is saying, "Whoa, how did they do that? :O" XD Pretty crazy how people try to get a look that's totally fake.

I saw this on TheologyWeb.com
It was very thought provoking and shows what lengths society and media will go for their cash cow and the chance to have power to manipulate and corrupt the minds of people.

Wow, that is a real insight. I'm just really thankful for an organization like Campaign for Real Beauty is there to try and prevent ideal beauty from taking over girls. I thought the lady was fine as is.

This kind of thing weighs heavily on my mind because I have has to spend a lot of time correcting the thinking of little girls who have been totally suckered by this type of media. They have such honest hearts it never occurs to them to think they are being tricked. Even among my peers, the effects irritate me; I have had other young women I barely know tell me the wish they had to guts to appear naturally like I do. By that I mean, no hair dye, no fake tan, etc.

Wow this is encouraging to everyone im sure because everywhere we look we see someone who is super skinny or have the perfect face or whatever it makes me mad i personally have fallen for that in the past but then God helped me through that so God made all of us the way we are we shouldnt want to be any other person because if we were that person we wouldnt want to be them we would want to be someone else its like my friend Shandel she is one of the samllest people that i know but she insists she is fat and she gets that from media like im totaly sure.
So like i have said and many people her will agree God doesnt make mistakes he makes masterpeices.

My family has a photography business, and we are payed to do that kind of stuff for people, I know all about it. People aren't interested in buying unless they look "better" in the pictures than they do IRL.

That reminds me of how I've seen new pamphlets for school photos the the recent years, and how it shows that they get rid of zits/blemishes/whatever, and a before and after pic. It's like... nice if that was real for the person, but with a pic like that of all these things taken out, it wouldn't be them in the end :/ Heh the pamplets were funny cause with the after pic it said something like "all gone!" Sheesh if only it was easy in real life with only the click of a button :/

Amen to that... XD

Seriously though, the one thing that really stood out for me in this is that its all about change. When we these adverts are made in the west, you notice that her blemishes are removed, her neck elongated, cheek bones pushed up and such but the major part of the makeup is to give her a more tanned apperance.
When I lived in the Philippines the thing to do was to change the appereance so that the models appeared to have lighter skin.

The media is obseesed with making the models appear different as if that makes them rarer and suppossedly more desireable for it. Personally I think its a load of rubbish and what not but unfortunately, at least on most people, it works. I'm just glad some large scale cosmetics company has gotten on this case and is making a point about it. Looks like there is still hope after all.
Will insert something intelligent here later... maybe

*shakes head* Wow. :shady:

Things like this blow my mind. It shows how far makeup, hair stylists and a good fan (for the windblown look) can change your appearance, but it's twisted to see that people consider that to be inadequate, and resort to computer manipulation.

On a funny note, a few years ago, my family had a family portrait taken, and the studio offered a 'blemish clean-up' service, which involved getting rid of glasses glares and parental neck wrinkles. When we got the pictures back, they had "fixed" my dad's moustache by trimming the corners off. Ticked my dad off to no end, 'made his moustache look funny.' He still mentions now and then that I should photoshop his moustache back.

My family has been dealing a lot with media image perception lately due to my little sister's diagnosis with anorexia a couple of years ago. I'm going to send this video to my mom, and have her watch it and then share it with my little sister. My sister has recovered quite a bit, but still has issues, and has a lot of friends who have issues as well.

Agree. Personally, I haven't met too many women that looked good with extensive "cosmetic" help that weren't just fine already.

Of course, before we all bash the rather disturbing Photoshop eye enlargement, let's all remember this is an anime site - home of BIG eyes!

It is no secret that we are attracted to pretty things. Personally, for one's own sanity, I think the key lies not with admonishing advertisers trying to capitolize on this basic instinct, but rather to divorce your own self image from the pretty things we like to look at.

This is a good video to that end if it helps people realize that no one is quite a pretty as a billboard.
