I got a 30001 one unit a year after launch, recently it started making grinding sounds in some games... I sent it into Sony and it still didn't... well it started doing that with my Lunar 2 and I got fed up with it and sold it for 90 bucks to Game Stop(yes they knew about the problems but it passed their "tests". So I picked up a 50001 model today and... wow, it works SO much better and its so much more quiter, I noticed a major difference with the fan/laser noises. I'm very impressed with the incrase in quality is amazing, and the funny thing is, I just paid 179 for it, while I paid 300 for my orignal PS2(which never worked this well). Well all in all this has tought me a lession, wait about two years after a system comes out to buy it, it'll be cheeper and it'll work better.

All the people with an X-Box that's having problems with the Thompson DVD drives learned the same lesson. I wait at least a year myself, but I made an exception with the Gamecube. That thing holds up REALLY well.

I had the same problem with my PS2. I belive that technical term is "Disc Read Error," but what it comes down to is the system making a weird noise and not playing certain games. My PS2 was one of of the older 30001 models, and I sent it in for repair last December (basically as soon as I knew the problem could be fixed, and for free at that). In contrast to your case, my PS2 has worked perfectly since then, even with former "problem games." Maybe I'm wrong, though: was your problem Disc Read Errors (DREs)?

No... I wasn't having DRE's my PS2 was making a "grinding" sound with certian PS1 games, this happened even after Sony "fixed" it, maybe it was just beyond help? I don't know, I just know I'm happy with my current unit, btw Duckie, I got my orignal PS2 almost exactly a year after launch.

I don't know...that sounds a lot like what mine was doing. Perhaps it was just beyond help.

Actually I just spent 25 dollars on it... which I really couldn't afford. Though the orignal one I did spend with money I made from an old job of mine... but for this one.. I had to trade in so many things.

Well, thought I would give it a shot.
What did you make your other one from? What was the job?

I had that same problem...though mine was the first model which was launched October 26, 2000 I forgot the model type though. It was to the point where it didn't want to play DVDs, CDs, and PSone games oh....blue-back disc too. I finally got a new one recently since I sold my old one for under thirty.

Does this story have a happy ending, if you are not playing Lunar in all it's full glory I reckon it was. Has anyone here had any problems with Xbox, because I am starting too. I couldn't start up Crimson Skies the other day... : (

The XBox problem (if it's the same one that's been around for a while) is related to an early version of the system that had a DVD ROM that didn't read multi-layer DVDs very well (weak laser).
Those XBoxes have the same problem with many games (most notablily was Morrowind, but other larger games as well).
Aside from the occasional bug the only other problem my XBox gives me is with it getting too warm (and that's because it's stuffed in a cabinet at the moment, and I live in Florida
