Friend Doubting Christianity

Postby SnoringFrog » Sun Mar 08, 2009 6:25 pm

Just recently my friend Isabella (who I very much look up to spiritually, despite her being a few years younger than me) told me she was doubting her salvation and Christianity as a whole.

I'm not sure what happened to make her feel this way, but she could really use alot of prayer. She's always seemed to me to be one fo the strongest Christians I know, so this is entirely unexpected and difficult to deal with. I could use prayer as well for wisdom in what to say to her.

Dear Snoring <3

I know exactly where your coming from. When I hadn't given my life God but called myself a Christian (since I had believed God existed) I had a best friend who sought God incredibly. The Bible tells us about things that tries are faith or what we should look out for. My example on him during those years I think seriously influenced him (me not putting God first in my life and telling him about anything I did etc). He ended up falling back in his faith tremendously =( and I think I'm partly to blame but I'm not going to hold that against myself because I feel like God's already forgiven me (since he fell back in faith, some stuff happened to me after that drastically changed my life and made me understand my need for God).

Another friend had the same problems.

It happens Snoring and it hurts. We are nothing with out God so pray to him and no matter what happens do your best not to let this test your faith. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and be there for your friend =)

Btw take a look at James 3:17, thats what you want to be praying for it sounds like and look at the words it uses.

God Bless.

Being a few years younger than you would make her around 13 or 14, right? Most young christians question their faith around that age, particularly if they grew up in a christian household. Everybody has doubts sometimes anyway. I'll be praying that your friend can overcome them.

Yeah, I think that's about how old she is. Freshman in high school. Yeah, I started really doubting mine at 13, but I honestly believe that that was because I wasn't saved at all.

I'll pray for you and your friend.

It might be helpful to continue to talk with her about it and ask her what points she feels doubtful about. Even if you don't know the answers either, it might help her to have the support from a fellow Christian, just listening to her and letting her work it out. It's better when a friend is doubting to be both loving and accepting of them and supportive of their search. If she can make it through this time of doubt, her faith will be all the stronger for it. And maybe if she can talk it out, she'll be able to make sense of it without you saying much of anything. But if you can research the questions she has and get back to her with some answers, that will definitely be a big help.

Praying Snoringfrog.

Been in this situation on both ends. In my opinion, its alright to have doubts, in fact it can lead to a much stronger faith. Being there for her questions, answering them (the best you can) and simply sharing with her that doubts is "okay" may help her get through the rough period.

Doubting not only lets us have stronger faith, doubting IS faith. Or rather, It is doubt which lets us have faith. As one of my favorite theologians, Paul Tillich, once said: "Doubt is not the opposite of faith]

Don't be scared of doubt. Instead, [i]embrace
it. And tell others to embrace it as well.
